How to write on your blog every day

Somebody asked me the other day “How often do you blog?”

I said “Every day.” Insert their surprised look.

“Wow, you blog every day! How can you possibly do that? Don’t you run out of ideas?”

Did I tell you my blog turns 12 years old soon? That means I’ve done a lot of blogging over the years! I have over 2,500 published articles! I’ve not always blogged every day, so it’s been up and down. But over the last few years I’ve tried to average at least 5-6 blog posts a week (which is what I call blogging every day).

Firstly, I treat my blog like it’s my full time job. Not every blogger is able to do this – there’s not enough hours in the day. But if you do have the time, I’d make sure you were blogging at least 5 times a week if you wanted to make a good go of blogging. Secondly, I make sure I have enough topics during the week. Thirdly, you’ll notice I have a pattern on my blog – I have certain things on certain days.

Here’s 5 tips to keep you blogging every day…

1. Pick a weekly theme (or two).
This will take the stress off what’s needed on your blog on certain days. I have Floor Plan Friday and Stunning Sunday. Some bloggers do Wordless Wednesday or linky parties. Find something that you stick to every week. There’s at least one post you don’t need to think too hard about. Plus your readers will recognise the consistency and look forward to it each week.

2. Read.
Make sure you read lots of other blogs. I do read lots. I might see a topic which another blogger is sharing and automatically I think I might like to do something with that too. Just because someone else wrote about it, doesn’t mean I am not allowed to. I always write it down and come back to it later. I obviously connected with the topic and I knew I could contribute more or a different angle on it. Use other bloggers as inspiration. Also read news websites and the newspaper for topics. Draw on something you’ve read offline.

3. Teach.
I bet you know something I don’t know. Teach us all something new. What if someone found you via a google search or pinterest who hasn’t been to your blog before? There’s a new reader right there (or even more!). YOU might not need help today on how to keep your blog topics flowing, but because this blog post hangs around for years, I have the potential to pick up new readers just via a search. Get my drift? So, go for it, teach people something you already know.

4. Photos.
Take photos and lots of them. Save them on your phone or your computer. When you’re feeling low on topics, share some pretty pictures you’ve captured. People always feel good about seeing nice photos.

5. Lists.
Make a list of things. Pip does this very well. So it takes the stress out of trying to write a full post every day. It’s more about writing in bites. But I also think writing in point form is an easy way to create a good post to read that doesn’t need you to sit for hours concentrating on sentences and flow. Plus the reader is usually time-poor so it’s much easier for them to scan over your post and pick out the bits they like. Maybe a list could be your weekly post on a certain day.

Lastly, I will say don’t waste time. If you want to blog every day you need to make the commitment and plan it out. “All great things require sacrifice, suffering and a little bit of pain. It’s not easy. But it’s always worth it.” Sit down, write it out and move on. But you must not forget to promote it too! What’s the point of writing it if you’re not going to shout it out? Send it to Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram. Just hustle. 😉

Thanks for the positive take on everything. I’ve only been blogging a few months so was looking for some tips. I came upon your page right after reading another blog which was claiming to give tips but was full of statistics on how many blogs fail within a year so I was feeling quite flat. Your tips on the other hand are positive and inspiring and its wonderfully generous of your to share. Thank you. Deb

Hi there, I’m not writing every day at all but I do think it’s a great idea to do it if you are blogging as a job. I have another etrrific writing job at the moment and decided to keep the blog ticking over with two posts a week but if and when I give it a full-time go I will be coming straight back here for inspiration!

I am loving these tips. I’ve enjoyed writing for so many years but never thought to write a blog. I have verbal diarohea with my head everyday when I could in fact be putting it in a blog! Why didn’t I think of this before! Your blog is very inspiring and thank you for all the interesting content. Today is my first time here but I shall be a regular no doubt :-))http://instagram.com/p/o0Fhsflmec/
