Transforming Your Bathroom: From 1970s to Modern Marvel

Bathrooms are undoubtedly one of the most rewarding spaces to renovate in your home. Bringing a dated 1970s-style bathroom into the modern day can be a truly transformative experience. With a few strategic upgrades and design choices, you can turn your old-fashioned washroom into a stylish oasis that perfectly blends functionality and aesthetics.

DO:

  • Install a new shower screen: One of the most noticeable changes you can make to your bathroom is replacing the outdated shower curtain with a sleek and modern shower screen. Not only will this enhance the visual appeal, but it will also create a more spacious and open feel.
  • Add tiles all the way to the ceiling: To achieve a contemporary look, consider tiling your bathroom walls from floor to ceiling. This not only adds a touch of luxury but also makes the space appear larger and more cohesive. Choose timeless and neutral colours to ensure longevity and versatility in your design.
  • Maximise storage options (like a mirror cabinet): Effective storage is essential in any bathroom. Invest in a stylish mirror cabinet that not only serves as a functional storage solution but also adds a decorative element to the space. This will help keep your bathroom clutter-free and organized.
  • Buy products that comply with Australian standards: When selecting fixtures, fittings, and materials for your bathroom renovation, always ensure they comply with Australian standards. This ensures the quality, safety, and durability of the products, giving you peace of mind for years to come.
  • Install new lighting: Proper lighting can make a significant difference in the overall ambiance and functionality of your bathroom. Opt for well-placed lighting fixtures that provide both task lighting, such as above the vanity, and ambient lighting to create a relaxing and inviting atmosphere.

DON’T:

  • Change the plumbing layout if possible: One effective way to save on costs and minimize complications is to avoid altering the plumbing layout of your bathroom, if feasible. By working within the existing plumbing framework, you can focus on updating the visual aspects and functional elements without delving into extensive renovations.
  • Add bath/shower combo (unless you are really pushed for space): While it may be tempting to install a bath/shower combination unit for the sake of convenience, carefully consider your space constraints. If you have sufficient room, it’s advisable to separate the bath and shower to create a more luxurious and tailored experience.
  • Pick obscure tiles: While unique and unconventional tile designs might be enticing, it’s generally wiser to choose timeless and versatile options. Classic tiles not only have a broader appeal but also ensure your bathroom won’t feel outdated in a few years. Opting for neutral tones and simple patterns allows for flexibility in terms of changing décor styles over time.
  • Overcapitalise: It’s important to strike a balance between your bathroom renovation budget and the potential return on investment. Avoid overspending on extravagant features and unnecessary luxuries that may not significantly increase the value of your home. Focus on creating a well-designed, functional space that suits your needs and preferences.
