Stainless steel bench-top in the laundry?

Thank you so much for all the love yesterday. I had such an amazing day. I am still buzzing! So much to think about and organise and I have a hundred blog posts running around in my head! But this post today was one I had prepared earlier and I love your feedback when I talk housey stuff… so let’s go with this one today… 🙂

I am considering using stainless steel in my laundry as a bench-top. What do you think? I have some gorgeous and special friends who will supply it for me. Do you like stainless? I do! Just love it when you tell me your thoughts. After all, I’m going to be blogging this whole house building experience and you’ll all have a say in it.

Hope you have a great Friday. I’m off to pick up passport forms, do groceries and attend to my overflowing inbox!

Again, thanks for all your support. I promise I will share everything I learn at BlogHer. And who won the $5,000 cash? Anyone know? I hope it was one of my readers!

LOVE the look of Stainless steel! But don’t like how it scratches. May not be such an issue in the laundry, but if you do put a washing basket on it, or the kids race their cars across it (lol) … I have boys, I KNOW what they are capable of…well just at thought! I like the idea though! But not practical for my crew! 😉 UGH!

Hmmm didn’t think of that. Although baby oil is good to clean up stainless steel and hides scratches 🙂

Oh I never knew that! 🙂 I think it would look very sophisticated. And I’ve decided my next laundry is going to look amazing! I want it to have a very modern clean stream-lined feel! So this might be the go!

It looks so modern and nice. It would also be easy to clean, but the scratches would drive me nuts. (Never knew that about baby oil and scratches though). The storage space in those laundries is fantastic! Wish my laundry was like that!

I really like the idea of the stainless steel, it makes a lot of sense in what can be a messy area. They are great laundry pics, I would kill for that big long one in my home. Im pretty sure I’m just going to start my house building experience all over again and just get you to plan it all out for me Katrina lol…geez you still think of everything!!

I think it looks amazing….but doesn’t look so good with wear & tear. Would love to see what you end up going with..I need inspiration for our up & coming build.
    Congrats on the car also!

The only thing I don’t like about stainless steel for benches is the price. So if you can get a good deal go for it:)

  • Sam

Do it!! Any wear and tear just adds to the look 😉

I love the stainless steel benches in the laundry and yes, they probably will get mega scratched but… who cares, after a while all the scratches will blend together! I have put timber benches in mine – weird I know but it is part of the pantry and it is great – I keep oil and fine sandpaper close by and I love the patina that is appearing.

I like it! It looks great and is practical. How would one find out who won the $5,000?

I have it in my laundry (since last Sept), and it’s great. We chose it as we have a downstairs, under the house type laundry, and we needed something water proof. It does seem to deteriorate quickly though – like little rust marks. And yes you have to be careful about scratches. I think it all depends on the traffic you have in your area. I’ve been meaning to ask hubby about how to clean it off as it is stainless steel. He found it on ebay – it’s from a commercial kitchen.

    hope that helps!

I have a white laminex bench top in my laundry where the sink is and on the other side of the washer / dryer I have a stainless steel Ikea Udden bench (picked up on ebay for $40) for sorting etc and I LOVE it!!! The white laminex and stainless steel go well together and I don’t mind a little wear and tear in this hard working room!
    Go for it!!! ;o)

Congrats on your win, how exciting to be going to NY! Also looking forward to watching your reno unfold- we are shortly doing a kitchen/deck/laundry reno on our california bungalow so looking forward to many of your posts to come.
We had stainless steel in our last kitchen. It does scratch which annoyed me and can also rust- we did not have that problem as ours was near the stove only but friends who used it on their bathroom vanity have heaps of rust spots and it looks shocking. Best of luck for a smooth project. mel.

Scratches are just the patina of life. I’d go for it if the price is right. xx

I love the idea of stainless steel in the laundry. So practical. I would handle the scratches, all part of the fun. Congratulations on your win and I look forward to the blogging of the new house.

Congratulations on the big win Katrina, well deserved.

I have had stainless steel on my laundry benches for 3 years now, love it! Looks great and is very versatile in a wet area. It does get some surface scratches but as you said earlier it cleans up easily and still looks like a million dollars.
    Go for it!

Hmmm…I’m kind of going to go against the tide here (you live me for my honesty, right?). I love the clean, streamlined look of stainless steel but it also looks “cold” to me. I have a large laundry/ironing room in my current house and I spend a lot of time in there, as you can imagine with 4 males in the house! Think I would hate being in there if it felt ‘cold’. But I’m weird lol, that’s just me. Out of curiosity, do you like stainless steel bench tops for kitchen as well?

    • Katrina (author)

Haha, you’re allowed to say that! I need to know all the aspects! I won’t do stainless in the kitchen – just the laundry 🙂

WD40 solved tea staining and rust issues

  • Patrick

If you can afford it and you can stand it being scratched, then I guess you should go for it.
