Last week I decided there was too much negative air in my house. My husband rolls his eyes when I start going on about negative energy, or feng shui, or clutter. When I feel like I am in a rut, or work isn’t flowing, or I am unwell I always think the energy around me needs to change. I had a really good clean up put a few feng shui practices in to play – out came the compass! That’s another post for another day haha… Even though you can’t see energy with the naked eye, you can certainly feel it. That’s what I was feeling and it was time to move it on.
The energy left around can be a result of negative feelings, thoughts, events, and stress that you have experienced in your home/office. Your house is like a sponge! Whatever takes place in your environment is absorbed into the walls, furniture, carpet, ceilings, and objects. These negative energies accumulate in the corners and are tucked away in places you can’t even see. Also, if you’ve had a negative event happen recently or a lot of sadness or fear, cleanse your space immediately.
So how do you start removing the negative energy? It’s pretty easy, you just need to be aware of it it.
Clean rugs, curtains, windows, couches
Every time you clean, you remove negative energy. Just the simple task of cleaning and opening up the windows to let fresh air in, cleanses your home. Removing toxic items, bad smells and disinfecting surfaces rids your space of bad energy. Vacuuming is my favourite thing – especially behind furniture. This is where energy can get trapped.
Open windows and let fresh air in and negative energy out
When you open the windows (even when it’s freezing cold) you can feel the freshness coming inside. Just a few minutes of fresh air can push any negativity lingering all the way out the door! I also smudge my space often when I’ve had lots of people in my house, or it’s been school holidays or I just feel that air needs to be moved on.
Remove clutter
If furniture and items can hold on to negative energy, then it’s time to start a big declutter in your home or office. I really relate to this one. Pack stuff up and put it away or throw it out! Kitchen benches need to be clear. So do your work spaces. Negative energy needs things to hang on to, so keeping your home clutter free you’re not giving it a chance to hang around!
Loud noises
Sometimes I love some loud music to lift my spirits, but I am also aware that there are moments in life I need things to be quiet and peaceful. This works 2 ways. Loud music can break the flow of the energy we can’t see, but staying quiet also gives us time to be still and relaxed. We already know what a difference music can make to our own energy, and it does the same for spaces. Here’s 10 songs to make you happy!
Diffuse oils
I’ve got this one covered! I have lots of those around my home. I like to clear the air with a fresh scent. Lavender, vanilla and cinnamon works well.
Rearrange the furniture
Negative energy needs something to “cling to.” Arrange your room with as much wide open space as possible, allowing any negative energy to disperse. Even just moving the furniture to clean behind can break up the flow of energy. Turn that chair to face a different way, move that pot, or hang a different piece of artwork.
Indoor plants
Plants add color, life, oxygen and positive energy to your home. I wrote a post on indoor plants and feng shui over here if you’re interested in reading about their benefits. I have recently put a Chinese Lucky Plant in the south-east corner of my home (which coincidentally is in my home office – let the good energy flow in there!)
Electrical appliances
We have a lot of electrical things in our house – phones, computers, televisions, hair dryer etc… Every now and then they need to be turned off, packed away and out of sight. Cords are my biggest phobia. I hate them. That’s why we’ve gone wifi with almost everything at home and I don’t give negative energy a chance! I am a shocker for leaving my hair dryer or straightener out on the bench though – but I am learning to get it packed away and in the drawer asap.
Meditate
I am learning how to do this. It’s a bit new to me. But I have been seeing some huge benefits from doing this daily. It’s been positive for me to be able to centre my thoughts, ground my emotions and know how to let things pass. It’s also a very good manifesting tool.
A few more tips…
- throw out flowers as soon as they appear dead and remove dried floral arrangements
- make your bed every day
- close the bathroom door and put the lid down on the toilet
- don’t sleep with wardrobe doors open
- bring your washing in
Every time you clean your home you are removing negative energy. Cleaning your home or workspace will make it lighter and more positive. This is a result of organising, ridding yourself of things you no longer need and removing toxic items from your environment. Just opening windows brings in fresh, positive energy.
Even if you can’t see negative energy I know you can feel it. Ever visited someone else’s home and it just didn’t feel right? Or have you visited someone’s home and it feels light and positive and happy? Spending just a small part of your day cleaning, sorting and removing bad energy can really improve your life.
