Why We’re Prioritising Insulation (And Why You Should Too)

When most people think about building or renovating, they jump straight to the fun stuff. Tiles, tapware, paint colours, and furniture. I get it. That’s the stuff you see every day. When most people think about building or renovating, they jump straight to the fun stuff. Tiles, tapware, paint colours, and furniture. I get it. That’s the stuff you see every day. But today, I want to talk about something you feel every day: insulation.

We’ve just installed SoundScreen insulation in the internal bedroom and bathroom walls using R2.5 acoustic batts. These are specifically designed to reduce noise transfer between rooms, absorb sound, and make everything feel more peaceful. Whether it’s kids playing in one room, someone watching TV late at night, or a partner getting up early and clanging around in the ensuite, this layer makes a noticeable difference.

For our external walls, we’ve chosen R2.7 batts to provide a higher thermal barrier. And in the ceiling, we’re using a thick layer of R6 insulation for maximum temperature control. All of this creates what I like to call a comfort envelope. It keeps the internal environment consistent and protects the home from external noise and weather shifts.

Why Insulation Matters (Beyond Just Warmth)

Insulation isn’t just for keeping you warm in winter or cool in summer. It does so much more:

Reduces heating and cooling costs
The better your home is insulated, the less your air conditioner or heater needs to work. That means lower energy bills all year round, and in a time when electricity prices are on the rise, this makes a big difference.

Makes your home quieter
Noise inside your home can be disruptive, especially in open-plan living or multi-bedroom homes. Acoustic insulation adds a layer of calm, especially between bedrooms, bathrooms, or home offices.

Improves energy efficiency
A well-insulated home does not just feel better, it performs better. If you’re aiming for a sustainable or energy-efficient build like we are with our 8-star home, insulation is absolutely essential.

Reduces drafts and uneven temperatures
Ever walked into a room that feels freezing while the rest of the house is warm? That usually comes down to poor insulation or gaps in the construction. Getting it right from the start means no more uncomfortable cold spots or sweltering corners.

It Might Not Be Glamorous, But It’s Essential

Insulation might not be the most exciting part of your build. You won’t be showing it off on social media or raving about it over brunch. But it is one of the most important decisions you’ll make during construction. It has a massive impact on the overall comfort and running costs of your home.

So, while it might be tempting to splurge on things you can see, like feature tiles or tapware, I’d argue that what’s behind the walls is just as valuable. Probably more so.

Good insulation means better living. It is that simple.
