Hi there! Thanks for popping in!
I thought I’d share my laundry with you today. It’s big, boring and bland…
As you can see from the photos, it’s a lovely sunny room, and it’s a thoroughfare between the garage and the kitchen. I have lots of storage too. Originally I wanted overhead cupboards but due to $$ I had to cut back + I didn’t really need them because I have the huge ‘panic room’ on the left.
I try really hard to keep the room neat and tidy. It can become a dumping ground as it’s the first room you walk in to from our garage and when you’re in the kitchen you can see straight in to the room.
So…. I have been thinking about how I could make it a little prettier, warmer, useful…
Help me out? What should I put on the wall? I don’t want to spend huge $ here.
But no indoor clothes airers.. I don’t want to actually see my washing!
I was thinking of a few shelves (but that’s just more storage and the wall is huge, so where do I start/stop them?)?
Or I could paint it?
Or I could buy a blackboard calendar?
Or put a quote on the wall?
I don’t think the photo’s do the room any justice at all! Stupid iphone! But I’m sure you get the idea. All images that are not my own can be found on my Pinterest boards.
I even thought about putting a TV in there! I’m in there so much 🙂
So, what do you think? Sometimes a big bland space can be hard to work with. AND I am terrible at deciding things for myself. Give me YOUR laundry and I can sort it in 2 minutes, but I am so indecisive when it comes to my own house. I STILL have boxes everywhere and am happy to live like this until the right thing comes along, or the right idea hits me in the face. This is why I haven’t shown you my living areas yet! Do you do that too?
Happy Tuesday everyone! X

I’m ordering this for my laundry. Just the right size to fill the gap and easy to remove when I need a change.
Katrina
I love that!! Thank you!
Katrina
Karen – that’s the image link – which shop is it from?
Karen
I found it on etsy under laundry decals
Katrina
Ok, great! Thanks.

I would go with shelves as you can keep the bench clear and place your folded towels and a few baskets on them…..
Do it do it do it

Yeah, I’m leaning that way too Pen.

I would get three medium/large canvases from cheap shop and get your boys to create some art for the walls. Also a colouful cute piggy bank for all the loose change you find in pockets. Apart from that I would gladly swap my messy laundry for yours
Something Gorgeous
I love the simplicity of your laundry, so I wouldn’t do too much as I wouldn’t want it to look cluttered or messy. Perhaps shelves over the sink area and a large mirror or artwork up the over end. The problem with too many shelves is you have to clean them and the last thing you want is more work. Also from my experience the more shelves and cupboards the more junk you collect. So keep it simple. xT
Katrina
You are totally right! I do love the simplicity, but I think maybe something little would be good. X
Jayde
Yes it’s big…but not boring or bland, I really love the simplicity and clean look of it how it is. I don’t think you need to do much to it at all, maybe just one shelf or one small thing on the wall but don’t overdo it!!!

Hello Katrina
My husband and I are building and I can’t seem to find a floor plan that I “love”. Was wandering which builder you went with to build your house?
Katrina
Are you in Wagga Karen? I designed my own plan and got a private builder to do it. I can email you his details?
Karen
Unfortunately no. I am in the Hunter Valley. Maybe I should ‘try’ and design own. I have just downloaded the plan app which I saw on your website. Thanks.
Amy
Hi there just came across this blog and saw the comment about downloading the plan app – can anyone shed some light? have checked the main blog but can’t find anything. Just about to start renovating, so would be keen to check it out. thanks!
Amy
PS I love your Blog… so many beautiful things! Thanks for sharing!
Katrina
It’s in the app store called Planit2d 🙂

I agree with Brooke … Artwork would be cool. Something bright – maybe a saying or thought … I have a painting i did that says “every little thing is gonna be alright” that I love – I stole the idea off Pinterest … It’s bright red – with white letters and cost me about $20 for the wood it’s painted on…

Looks awesome. Art made by the boys would be brilliant. Also why not use part of it to hang coats and put shoes etc after coming in from outside or garage. The Americans have mud rooms. Look at pinterest.

I have exactly the same problem but…..my laundry is smaller and has a guest toilet and shower (I think my only regret so far) so I ordered this on the weekend to put next to the toilet and have decided that I am going to make the room a talking point rather than trying to ignore it. And going a bit industrial-tastic too.

That is very very cool Mel!

Your laundry is fantastic!! I have a shelf above my bench, you could put 2 because you have more space. I don’t have anything on them that necessarily says “laundry” because like you I have plenty of storage to keep stuff hidden away. I just styled the shelf very simply and it looks nice. I also have coats hooks on an old oar in there too.
How lovely to have all that space 🙂
Katrina
Sounds gorgeous to me – I am getting some great ideas!

It looks lovely Katrina!! I’ve been drooling over laundries on Pinterest lately. Somewhere bright and sunny like this would be divine. Mine is under the house and dark and damp. It’s not a happy place to be. Your back door is wonderful – I love that it’s glass and can let in all that light! Fi xxx
Katrina
Thanks for popping over Fi! And thanks for your kind words. XX

Floating shelving would like amazeballs in there as well as a lovely large colourful print, & since it has such a sunny aspect – why not add a few colourful potted plants – maybe Lily of the Valley or Madonna Lily? I love your choice of tiles too!!
Katrina
I hadn’t thought of indoor plants – perfect spot!
Natasha
We kinda have similar laundries. I think it needs a pop of colour, it would look lovely painted blue or grey. Definitely add some shelving. I’m going to add a striped rug to mine and I think the idea of putting a plant in there is great idea. Love the idea too of a wall mounted tv.
Niki
KC the thing that came to me first would be to fill it with a couple of large colourful outdoor shots of the boys & maybe make it your boys artwork area,ie have all their stuff on the walls. Dunno why just what I thought probably because you don’t need anymore storage. But definitely can see two or 3 large vibrant canvases of the boys with their sneakers all in a row, holding hands or playing with a hose that sort a thing, does that make sense? Niki x

Your new home looks lovely , Katrina . And the laundry looks so spesh …. I would add an artwork to give it a warm feeling apart from that its itself pin worthy stuff 🙂 xx

Colour would make it warmer.. I find a lot of laundry’s look cold..I have a small laundry with no built in cupboards (my dream) so to give it some warmth but still keep it looking big I just painted the back of the door (going outside) to make it a feature.. Shelving would be great and making more organised..
Alison
I have overhead cupboards and I wish I hadn’t put them in now. I would have a few shorter shelves staggered at different spots so you don’t have to worry about where to start and stop them. Love the wall decal idea and I little tv too. Then you would could keep all the washing in one place while your hubby does it 😉 x

I love a great laundry , my head is spinning with ideas now. Since you said you are in there a lot it needs to be what makes you feel happy. I was going to do the TV thing but I couldnt find a small white flat screen & black wouldnt work !! The wall between the two doors needs some artwork or maybe the clock. I thought wallpaper it but if its a thoroughfare grubby little hands ( Im assuming ) will quickly soil it. I have a clock I love on the wall in mine , as I always seem to be pushing to get things done , I need to see the time. If you dont need the storage & as you said you can see it from the kitchen , just have it as display wall with your word print from etsy or just one row of thick white shelves below the print above the I will be revealing my laundry makeover in two weeks , just have to get the blind & make it pretty outside the door, as I have a big glass slider. You could subway tile , or paint it a happy colour. I still love white laundrys though , it looks fresh & you can change the look with coloured accessories , rug or wicker baskets for warmth & add green plants , herbs or fresh flowers.
Im so excited , I just want to get in there & do it !

Im thinking I have just learnt something about myself , I have a laundry fetish !

Such a lovely light space you have. Ikea have some very affordable narrow shelves, you could prop a few vintage/rustic metal picture signs on it. A hat/coat rack would lol nice you could hang seasonal items on it. I saw today the cover of Country Homes magazine (in plastic) had a ‘Pep up our laundry’ feature too may be of interest to you. 🙂
Anthea
‘Pep up your laundry!’
Ellie
I think paint it a nice colour for sure! That picture of the painted laundry looked open and bright! The laundry needs a little love because I hate doing laundry and that room needs all the help it can get!! LOL
Or a feature wall with some pretty wall paper even?!
