I’m Katrina, a DIY enthusiast and Airbnb host. By day, I work my magic in interior styling, bringing spaces to life. Excitingly, I have a new house build coming in 2024. Additionally, I sell eBooks on Renovating and How To Be an Airbnb host. Oh, and I proudly embrace life with a colostomy bag.

I’m a sucker, and I’ll probably do it again. But when you’re determined to renovate on a budget—talking under $7,000 for a full gut and rebuild—it’s a challenge.

When I bought this little flip house, the shower had been leaking; it was gross and unusable.

I did a lot of the work myself, as much as I could. Of course, I had a proper plumber and electrician come in, and I paid for the floor tiling to be done. A carpenter mate also helped with the structural stuff.

I handled all the demo, tiled the walls, fitted the vanity, added cornices, patched the plaster, applied wet seal, caulked… and did much more!

And all was done within budget. I definitely suffered through the renovation of the whole house. More than likely, I’ll do it all again. 😂

One of the ways to keep kitchen costs down is to explore painting cabinets and panels yourself.

This was a new kitchen, so I bought all the cabinets in raw MDF and then used my trusty spray gun to paint everything in the colour of my choice.

Saved me so much money and yes it only cost $5k for the cabinets and benchtop!

The cost of homes has grown 2.5x FASTER than wages since 2011...

A dozen organic eggs is almost $10 in my town. Garlic aioli is $8.30.

The average mortgage/rent in Australia is $2,500-$4,000 a month.

How are people supposed to afford home let alone all the other BASIC NEEDS?

I know what I want, but apparently it’s not that simple. I don’t get it, someone please explain? Why do we need 3 more?

It’ll push up repayments on a $500,000 loan by roughly $250 a month and on a $1,000,000 loan roughly $450 a month.

(This is just speculation but it’s all I see in my news feed today). It was a prediction for August, September and November to get the cash rate up to $5% (which equates to .25 x3 increases.

What’s the deal? Isn’t employment strong? But I get it, inflation is still high. About 37% of people have a mortgage, 30% own outright and the rest is rental. Would this mean more rent increases? So many questions.

One thing I wish I’d known before I started a house renovation

I wish I’d known that every task takes twice (or three times!) as long as you think, especially when you’re self-renovating. I found that most of the time is spent on moving things out of the way, prepping the area and tidying, rather than on the task itself.

From clearing out the space, protecting furniture, and setting up all the necessary tools, to the meticulous clean-up after each day’s work, these ‘behind-the-scenes’ activities can double your workload. It’s not just about laying tiles or painting walls; it’s the setup and takedown that turn a two-hour job into a whole day affair. This understanding has been crucial in adjusting my expectations and planning! I know now not to expect I’m going to work at double speed like the Instagram reels I share.

For anyone embarking on this journey, remember: patience and planning are just as important as the renovation work itself!
