How to Pull a Room Together (When You Have No Idea Where to Start)

If you’ve ever stood in your living room thinking“Why does this still not feel right?”you’re not alone. Most people don’t have bad taste. They just don’t have a process. If you’ve ever stood in your living room thinking
“Why does this still not feel right?”
you’re not alone.

Most people don’t have bad taste.

They just don’t have a process.

Here’s the order I always design in, and it changes everything.

Step 1. Start with the layout

Before you buy anything, figure out how the room actually works.

Ask yourself:

  • where do people walk?
  • where does the TV go?
  • how many people need to sit here?

If the layout is off, nothing else will fix it.

Step 2. Choose your hero piece

This is your anchor.

Usually:

  • sofa
  • dining table
  • bed

Everything else works around this.

If you skip this step, you end up with a bunch of random items that don’t relate to each other.

Step 3. Lock in a colour palette

Keep it simple:

  • 1 to 2 base colours
  • 1 contrast
  • 1 accent

This stops the space from feeling messy.

Step 4. Layer it up

This is where the room starts to feel finished.

Think:

  • rug
  • cushions
  • throws
  • lighting
  • artwork

Without these, a room always feels a bit flat.

Step 5. Check your scale

This is where most people go wrong.

Common mistakes:

  • rug too small
  • artwork too tiny
  • furniture pushed against walls

Getting the scale right makes a space feel intentional.

Step 6. Edit it back

Not everything needs to stay.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is remove:

  • extra chairs
  • too many decor pieces
  • clutter

Space is just as important as what you add.

If your room feels off, it’s usually not what you’ve chosen.

It’s the order you’ve chosen it in.

Follow a process, and everything starts to fall into place.
