There’s a big difference between a house that looks “builder grade” and one that feels custom.
And no, it’s not always about spending more.
It’s about being intentional with a few key decisions that most people overlook.
Here’s where the magic actually happens.
1. Go full height wherever you can
Cabinetry that stops short of the ceiling instantly dates a space.
Taking it all the way up:
- makes ceilings feel higher
- removes that awkward dust shelf
- feels more high-end straight away
This applies to kitchens, laundries, wardrobes, everything.
2. Upgrade the details no one talks about
These are the quiet achievers:
- skirting boards
- architraves
- door heights
Standard options are usually small and underwhelming.
Even a slight increase in size can completely change how your home feels.

3. Align things properly
This is one of the biggest differences between average and considered design.
Think:
- windows lining up with doors
- cabinetry centred on walls
- pendants positioned intentionally
When things are slightly off, your eye notices, even if you don’t know why.
4. Be consistent with your finishes
Mixing too many colours and materials is where things fall apart.
Instead:
- pick 2 to 3 main finishes
- repeat them throughout the home
- keep your palette tight
This is what makes a home feel cohesive, not chaotic.
5. Add one standout moment
A custom home always has something that makes you stop.
It doesn’t have to be expensive.
It could be:
- a feature wall
- a beautiful light
- a statement stone
- even something like bringing an outdoor material inside
That one moment lifts everything around it.
You don’t need a fully custom build to get that custom feel.
You just need to make a few smarter decisions early.
It’s less about adding more, and more about choosing better.
