One of the most asked questions I get about our home is about the cladding. People love the exterior and want to know exactly what it is and how we achieved the look.
We used Weathergroove Natural 150mm by Weathertex, finished with Intergrain Charred Black, and it’s honestly been one of my favourite design choices.

The Look, Modern, Textured and Timeless
I’ve always loved darker exteriors. Black and deep charred tones are everywhere in modern architecture right now because they create such a strong, clean statement. They make a home feel contemporary, a little architectural, and really intentional.
What I didn’t want was a flat black surface.
That’s where the Weathergroove Natural range works so well. It has a pressed woodgrain with knots and natural variation, so even though it’s a panel product, it still feels warm and organic.
The Intergrain Charred Black stain gives that rich, modern charred timber look, but the grain still comes through, which adds depth and texture. It stops the exterior from feeling harsh or too perfect, and instead gives it that modern but natural balance.
The vertical grooves also help visually elongate the home, which adds to that sleek, architectural feel.

Practical and Easy to Work With
From a build perspective, this product is really user friendly.
The panels are lightweight, easy to handle, and quick to install. Because of that, we were able to run the cladding across our garage door and around the front entry to create a seamless facade, which makes a big difference to the overall look.
It’s also low maintenance, with a 10 year warranty not to rot, split or crack, and the stain provides strong protection against UV and weathering.

A Better Choice for You and the Planet
Sustainability was a big factor in our decision, and Weathertex has some really strong credentials.
Weathertex is:
- Australian made and owned
- Made from 97% natural timber and 3% natural wax
- Better than zero carbon footprint
- Termite resistant, with sugars and starches removed
- Free from added silica, glues, resins and formaldehydes
The Natural range also carries Platinum LCA and Platinum health ratings, making it a healthier choice for your home and a better choice for the environment.

Simple to Plan and Order
Another thing I like, especially when specifying this for projects, is how easy the process is.
Weathertex has a take off calculator on their website that helps you work out quantities for your project. It takes the guesswork out of ordering and makes planning much more straightforward.

The End Result
For me, Weathertex ticks all the boxes:
- Modern, architectural look with natural texture
- Durable and low maintenance
- Lightweight and easy to install
- Strong sustainability credentials
- Australian made
Most importantly, it gives the look of dark timber, which is such a strong design trend right now, but with much better long term performance.
It’s one of those materials that works just as well from a design point of view as it does from a practical and sustainability perspective, and I still love the look every time I pull into the driveway.
