Week 2 – GUEST BEDROOM

If anything was going to drive the Blockheads to push through, it was the promise that completing this bedroom also meant saying goodbye to their camping days. After a few stumbles in the first week, everyone was determined to prove to the judges just how committed they were to the competition and to reveal the surprises they had in store.

The results ranged from a Modern Colonial guest room to playful children’s sanctuaries and chic retreats inspired by Art Deco or Neo-Beach styles. But who managed to impress the judges the most?

Kristian and Mimi (First place)

Kristian and Mimi’s bedroom, with its sleek and chic design, was the ideal match for the adjacent bathroom. Marty remarked that it could easily serve as an “extra master for the house,” admiring the asymmetrical design with a Porta Timber feature, Instagram-worthy styling (highlighted by the limited edition Marrunga Yubaa canvas print from Lizzy Stageman Art), and a perfectly chosen colour palette. Shaynna was captivated by the pendant and lamps, which beautifully complemented the Kinsman wardrobe colours, while Darren couldn’t resist the oversized upholstered bedhead and base from Martini Furniture—it was truly irresistible! Altogether, the judges agreed that this room was “next level,” solidifying the couple’s status as a formidable force this year.

Courtney and Grant (Second place)

Courtney and Grant’s kids’ bedroom was vibrant, playful, and bound to captivate young visitors. Shaynna noted that it was bursting with personality, especially with the Owl, Koala, and Wallaby artworks from Artist Lane. Marty highlighted its versatility, pointing out that a simple bed swap and new artwork could easily transform the space into an adult’s room. Darren, however, loved the room just as it was, especially the pistachio and blue colour scheme that complemented the Grafico vertical stripe wallpaper. The judges were concerned about the lack of a fan, worrying that potential buyers might be deterred by the limited climate control in an area known for fluctuating weather. Despite that, Marty concluded, the room was “just so cute!”

Jesse and Paige (Third place)

“Whoah!” exclaimed Shaynna as she stepped into Jesse and Paige’s guest bedroom, declaring it a “phenomenal” space filled with daring choices, starting with the bold Striped Linen Grafico wallpaper. Marty echoed her sentiment, noting that it was “very high end” and had a “beachy” vibe. Darren was particularly impressed by the mix of traditional and modern elements, with square set ceilings, no cornices, and home-style door handles. This combination, he said, created a “Long Island feel” that he absolutely loved. The wall-to-wall Kinsman wardrobes, Anna Blatman artwork from Artist Lane, and wainscoting brought everything together, making this room a significant step up from week one, they all agreed.

Ricky & Haydn (Equal fourth place)

As soon as Marty walked into Ricky and Hayden’s kids’ retreat, he finally exclaimed, “Bunk beds!” Paired with the expansive Grafico Wild World Map wallpaper over the Kinsman wardrobes, a gaming centre, and Disney+ on the wall-mounted TV, this room felt perfectly suited to a holiday home and was sure to be a hit with young visitors. However, Marty questioned whether the B2C hardwood frame bunks were positioned correctly. Placing them opposite the window made watching TV difficult and gave the room a somewhat claustrophobic feel. Despite the beautiful colour palette, Shaynna pointed out issues with the paint, plaster, and door. The boys were told it was time to raise their game!

Kylie and Brad (Equal fourth place)

“Easy-to-clean floorboards and an overhead fan—now this is more like it,” Marty remarked as he examined Kylie and Brad’s kids’ room. The matching “Oh Me” and “Oh My” artworks from Artist Lane and Licia Mango Wood bed sides certainly improved the space from previous weeks. However, Shaynna wasn’t entirely convinced. She found the room still quite dark with muddled styling and felt it leaned too heavily on Art Deco for the area. “There’s nothing coastal about it!” she said. She suggested replacing the blackout blind with a sheer and adding a bit more “sass” to the room. While it wasn’t a total loss, Marty noted that the fundamentals were there, and with a few adjustments, the room could appeal to a broader audience.
