Home trends from the 1980’s set to return

Oh the 80’s. Not a decade you remember for stylish interiors is it? Fresh from the neon, pattern clash of the 70’s, the 80’s gave us very little in home decor that is worth a re-run. Or did it? Here are a few trends that are making a comeback with a modern twist.

Big country kitchens

Country kitchens were a massive trend in the 80’s. Do you remember floor to ceiling pine and wooden kitchens matched with a red, green or orange laminate bench top? It was enough to make your eyes hurt. Today, country kitchens are glamorous. Think soft gold hard ware, dreamy pastel hues such as moss green, baby blues or light grey cabinetry finished with a marble bench top with a hint of oak. These kitchens still have their modern charm, but with a chic makeover.

Floral

Oh we loved our floral in the 80’s. Bedspreads, curtains, valances, cushions rugs! Everything was floral and we would even mix our florals together! Today, floral accents add a feminine touch to our homes. Used sparingly with a natural palette the end result is paired back elegance.

Geometric tiles

Geometric patterns and tiles were huge in the 80’s… but the colour palettes were ghastly! Bold pinks, blues and yellows were popular colour choices. Today you will find geometric tiles and patterns in blush, aqua, baby blues and mustards. Muted colours that work well in our large open plan homes.

Indoor plants

There is no explanation required on this one. We’ve all gone indoor plant crazy just like the 80’s. Only this time, we house our plants in stylish pots, baskets and group them together. The good old Monstera is still a popular choice as is the Boston Fern.

Soft pastels

Pastels were huge in the 80’s. Baby blue and apricot was a popular combination. Pastels have grown up, and today we are seeing sage-y colour pastel greens and dusty blue with a hint of mustard and blush pinks.

Brass

Brass today is used for subtle details in interior design, such as kitchen/bathroom fixtures, light fixtures, or table/chair legs. In the 1980’s brass was very overbearing, and now brass has come back in a more modern, and subtle way.

What home interior trends do you what to return with a modern twist?

    Hi Katrina !
My first marriage in ‘81 (aged 19) my little house in Huthwaite St Wagga was full of 80’s gems !
Mission brown velvet couches and dining chairs , Apple green shag bathroom carpet , indoor plants were everywhere ! Padded toilet seat with palm motif ?smokey glass dining table with a chrome dome pull down light very classy !
But what was big and still current now was cane , peacock chairs , macrame hangers & pampas !
Thks for the trip down memory lane have a great weekend , Suzy ???

I’m not big fan of big plants like Monstera, but few ideas from 80′ like soft pastels or floral motiv are absolutely ok for me.
