Decorating: Go Vintage

Vintage style uses old items to create a nostalgic look, but no longer is it all about a shabby country look with daisy flowers. You can find old items to add to a coastal feel, or a boho oasis or a retro vibe, or just to add some interest to the room. I am a sucker for aged bottles grouped together, or a beat-up sideboard with chipped paint. If you’re after a few vintage items to add to your home make sure you’re stalking your local Facebook buy swap sell pages, check out garage sales and antique stores. There’s always a bargain to be found.

Look for:

• Old suitcases
• Mirrors and group them on a wall
• Serving trays
• Linen
• Old beds which can be re-purposed
• Ladders
• Bottles
• Books
• Cameras
• Frames
• Baskets
• Cutlery and crockery

Collect useful items and don’t be afraid to use them – display bowls or salt and pepper shakers on open shelves, or use an old can as a vase.

Combine a collection by displaying items in colours that match tonally – grouping items together like old bottles, or a collection of old cameras will create a nice focal point.

Mix it up and don’t be afraid – use aged furniture and fabrics, but add to a room with modern chairs and lighting.

Go neutral – vintage works well when you use a neutral backdrop.

It’s all about the frame – if you’re on the hunt for some wall art, then it’s always more about the frame than the print. Chipped, aged and worn frames look great.

Avoid trends – if you’re a vintage lover you’ll be avoiding the trends like the plague. You’ll be using old vases, cushions, books to fill spots in your home. If you can mix vintage with some modern pieces you’ll be winning with an eclectic feel!
