Toss out your chemicals, make your own cleaning products and save money. I’ve been doing this over the last few months. It’s been so good. Easy, cheap and just feels like the right thing to do. Plus, the smell is waaayyyy better than nasty chemicals. It’s actually been really fun. I’ve loved the little project of gathering my supplies and spray bottles.

When cleaning with essential oils, you will need to make sure you’re using a brand where the oil is 100% pure to get the full benefits. Anything with synthetics won’t work as well and you’ll be left disappointed with the results.

The main reasons we’re using essential oils to clean are:

  • To kill any bacteria, fungus, and viruses.
  • The citrus (like lemon) family of essential oils will help to break down grease and grime.
  • To benefit from the aromatic smell they offer (not the chemicals which alter mood, can cause allergies and headaches).

Here’s 8 things you can clean with essential oils and as you can see you don’t need a lot of products because you can use the same oils for multiple purposes.

1. Mirrors and glass

You don’t need expensive chemicals for to clean glass and mirrors. You will just need a few drops of lemon, vinegar, water and a microfibre cloth. Lemon is about $13 a bottle and has 250 drops so this is very cheap.

2. Stainless steel

You can buy smelly and expensive cleaners if you like but I recently just used the mirror spray on my oven followed by some fractionated coconut oil on a paper towel to shine it up. Worked wonderfully and I didn’t need to buy anything new.

3. Timber furniture

Polish your furniture up with a few drops of lemon, 1 cup water and 1 cup vinegar in spray bottle/jar and add in 1 tablespoon olive oil. Lemon oil is great for deep cleaning and disinfecting your wood furniture and surfaces. Plus it will get any grime and sticky spots off your surface.

4. Floorboards

Pop a few drops of tea tree oil and castile soap in to your mop bucket. Or, peppermint and vinegar. Either will clean your floors up.

5. Bathroom tiles

People don’t often think essential oils will do a decent job in the bathroom because they aren’t powerful enough. But that’s wrong. Some essential oils like tea tree, oregano, and eucalyptus have been proven to work against viruses. Clove is excellent for mould.

6. Fridge

Add two parts hot water and one part vinegar to a glass spray bottle, then add the lemon. Spray mixture inside the fridge, let sit for a minute or two, and wipe with a damp cloth. The hot water and vinegar will not only loosen stuck on food, but will also help to eliminate yucky odours.

7. Toilets

I use essential oils to make my own fizzy toilet bombs that keep my toilet smelling fresh! Learn how to make them here.

8. Walls

I have made my own non-toxic jiff which will eliminate any marks off walls and doors. It also works great on kitchen bench-tops of beetroot and stains. Also give your stainless steel sink a good scrub with it.
