Katrina, congratulations honey, on your 500th post!!! I thought I had already commented, but cannot find my previous one:( 500 posts is amazing, you have dine such an increduble job and have always been so kind, welcoming and just downright funny! I still remember the first post I found of yours…Xmas 2009, involved your sister in law or sister, from memory and it gave me the biggest belly laugh (Oh gosh I hope I am correct now, or this will just be embarrassing!!!). The cost of homes has grown 2.5x FASTER than wages since 2011...

A dozen organic eggs is almost $10 in my town. Garlic aioli is $8.30.

The average mortgage/rent in Australia is $2,500-$4,000 a month.

How are people supposed to afford home let alone all the other BASIC NEEDS?

I know what I want, but apparently it’s not that simple. I don’t get it, someone please explain? Why do we need 3 more?

It’ll push up repayments on a $500,000 loan by roughly $250 a month and on a $1,000,000 loan roughly $450 a month.

(This is just speculation but it’s all I see in my news feed today). It was a prediction for August, September and November to get the cash rate up to $5% (which equates to .25 x3 increases.

What’s the deal? Isn’t employment strong? But I get it, inflation is still high. About 37% of people have a mortgage, 30% own outright and the rest is rental. Would this mean more rent increases? So many questions.

I wish I’d known that every task takes twice (or three times!) as long as you think, especially when you’re self-renovating. I found that most of the time is spent on moving things out of the way, prepping the area and tidying, rather than on the task itself.

From clearing out the space, protecting furniture, and setting up all the necessary tools, to the meticulous clean-up after each day’s work, these ‘behind-the-scenes’ activities can double your workload. It’s not just about laying tiles or painting walls; it’s the setup and takedown that turn a two-hour job into a whole day affair. This understanding has been crucial in adjusting my expectations and planning! I know now not to expect I’m going to work at double speed like the Instagram reels I share.

For anyone embarking on this journey, remember: patience and planning are just as important as the renovation work itself!

Cypress pine floorboards ➡️ This task wasn’t all DIY, but it certainly transformed this charming little house. The 50-year-old carpet had to go, and the vinyl cork was a nightmare to deal with. We also removed all the nails, strips, and skirting boards. Then, we hired a professional to handle the more challenging tasks—filling cracks, polishing, and sanding. It took about five days, but he did a fantastic job. The work was done in two living rooms and three bedrooms, all finished with a durable satin clear coat that is incredibly hard-wearing!
