5 tips for living a more low tox life

Living a low-tox life is more about reducing your toxic load and helping the environment along the way. I started living more low-tox about 2 years. It was time to cut all the chemicals around my house (well most of them, I do still like to paint my nails and cover my greys!), but I try pretty hard not to surround myself in artificial smells and products. I’m also aware that in this current climate I need to sanitise, so a good rule is 80-20. 80% toxin-free and I’ll let 20% slide.

But the end goal? Feel better!

Perfumes contain neurotoxins, which have a causal link to central nervous system disorders, headaches, confusion, dizziness, short-term memory loss, anxiety, depression, disorientation, and mood swings.

Of the five senses, only our sense of smell is linked directly to the limbic lobe of the brain, our emotional control centre. Fear, anxiety, depression, anger, and joy all emanate from this region of the brain.

Here’s 5 tips for living a more low tox life

1. Add plants –

Indoor plants have amazing benefits. Plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. So whilst we are sleeping, the plants are refreshing the air.

2. Natural Skin Care –

Your skin is a big sponge so what we add to it is important. Loading it up with chemicals can make you sick, affect your hormones and even your moods. Some products stop your skin breathing naturally and can cause or worsen skin conditions.

3. Non-toxic air freshener –

I used to love buying room sprays, candles, those plugin scented things, perfumes… Anything that smelt nice. Then I decided it was time I cleaned up the amount of toxins I use around my home. I could to eliminate unnecessary fragrances which were contributing to poor health and unhappy hormones. Make your own here.

4. Cleaning –

Cleaning products are high up there when it comes to introducing toxins into your home, and there are many simple solutions to avoid having to use harsh chemicals altogether. If you decide to start making all your own cleaning, room sprays, body balms, magnesium sprays, washing products… then this takes time to collect. Don’t feel like you have to race out and spend a heap of money. Most of them come from the supermarket with a few additional online purchases. I’ve got a list here, plus check out this graphic on how to make your own.

5. Avoid single-use plastics –

Do it for the environment. Most of us have the hang of the shopping bags, so other items like straws, coffee cups, drink bottles are easy to change. Single-use plastic, whether from lunch wrap or bags, takes anywhere from 20 to 1,000 years to break down.
