If you have been watching our build come to life, you might have noticed one of the little details I have been quietly obsessed with – square set window reveals. They might seem like a small decision in the grand scheme of a house build or renovation, but trust me, they make a huge impact on the overall finish.

So, what exactly is a square set window reveal?
Put simply, it is a window detail where there is no architrave or trim around the window. Instead, the plasterboard is finished flush to the edge of the window frame, creating a clean, crisp line. It is minimal, modern, and lets your windows and wall finishes shine without interruption.

Why choose square set over traditional architraves?

  • A Sleek, Contemporary Look
Square set reveals give your home that clean architectural finish. They work beautifully in modern homes where simplicity and straight lines are part of the overall aesthetic. If you are aiming for a minimalist or streamlined look, these are a perfect choice.
  • Less Visual Clutter
Without architraves, your eye is not distracted by trims. This creates a sense of calm and spaciousness, especially in open-plan areas with large windows.
  • Highlighting the View
If you have stunning views or architectural windows, square set reveals help keep the focus where it should be – outside. They frame the window like an artwork, not with timber or moulding, but with shadow and depth.

What to keep in mind

While square set looks simple, it is anything but. The finish requires skilled plastering to achieve that sharp, precise line. It is not the place to cut corners or rush trades. If the finish is sloppy, it will show. Get it right though, and the payoff is huge.

Also, think about durability. Square set edges can be more prone to knocks and bumps, especially in high-traffic areas or family homes. A good quality metal angle bead during plastering can help protect those edges.

How we are using it

In our new home, we have chosen square set reveals for all the big living room windows. Combined with no cornices and sleek shadow line details, the whole space feels modern, fresh, and thoughtfully considered. I love how it ties into the clean lines of our cabinetry and the simple palette of finishes.

It is one of those details that people might not even consciously notice, but they will feel it – the home feels calmer, more open, and more refined because of it.
