After my post here I have had lots of questions about building a new house. Yes, we’ll build. I am in early early early planning stages and am not sure about the details yet. I am just getting some ideas together and then we’ll go from there! Because I have such awesome and talented readers, I think you should all have a say! So, today I am looking at floor coverings (just for fun).
I have 2 options.
1. Cypress pine floorboards. The real deal in floorboards. Love these guys. If you scratch or dint them they still look great and it adds character to them. These fellas need to be laid on bearers and joists, so no concrete slab for the house. This option would be great if we did a split level house. I could also have in-floor gas heating.
2. Polished concrete floors. I am not sold on them, but some houses look ah-maz-ing! Look at this picture. Very cozy. I would be worried about the heating and their warmth. You could always have in-floor hydronic heating, but this is expensive. These floors would only be good if I built a single story for obvious reasons.
Which do you like?
Today is a public holiday here and most of my boys have gone for a day of fishing far far away. They left very early! I still have the littlest kid here with me today though. He doesn’t last very long in the boat! We are going to potter at home and I am going to visit some blogs. Yell out if you’d like me to pop over and say hi!
I have a very busy week ahead…I have some cool stuff happening with a meeting, a skype call and lots of emails to attend to, so it’s going to be busy and exciting! Plus we still have 1 week of school holidays left.
Have a great day xo

B is building a house
I could never have concrete (or tiles for that matter) anywhere other than wet areas. They are simply too cold cold for me 🙁
I love timber flooring but much prefer it being stuck to concrete as this eliminates the squeaks.
Can't wait for you to start building 🙂

Haha! The squeaks are part of the character and usually only happen in really old houses these days 🙂

I love me some timber floorboards – oh how I miss our old cottage!!! 🙁 But I also love the industrial polished concrete so popular these days. In our current kitchen we plan(ned) to polish the floorboards throughout the house (there is a hideous fake timber lino at the moment EVERYWHERE! ugh) and then have polished concrete benchtops to give it that industrial feel without having it all through the floor = cold. But NOW we're moving AGAIN so plans are scraped! SIGH!!!

I love floorboards too, although I think polished concrete looks fab in the right place – underfloor heating would be a must for me if I had concrete, princess that I am! LOL
We just built and laid bamboo flooring over the slab, in a dark chocolate colour, I'm in love with them and now think i could have gone even darker, despite my initial concerns about the colour 😉
Looking forward to following your build when the time comes!

Love both. But I'd really love to do polished concrete one day. That's what I would do if we were to build in under our house. xx

I love the look of concrete and if it had a good lot on light on it for a good thermal mass I would contemplate it. Otherwise the timber wins hands down. Warm and soft.

Floorboards – Just love them, they everything going for them. Mimi xx
BOB & MABEL
I love both but am always drawn to floorboards. They have stood the test of time!

We have been in our new build now for 12 months (gee that went fast) and I can't tell you the amount of positive comments we have had on our timber floor. to me it is great and I love it (after all I chose it) but it is home now so I don't see it as anything special until others comment. And it is super easy to clean!! Not sure of the industrial floor look with the concrete floor. It would depend on the overall look you were trying to achieve. For now though I vote timber too!

Personally, polish timber floors are the only way to go … just love our real timber floors !!
All the best with your house plans,

Wow i LOOOOVVEEEE the polished floor. I wonder how much that is instead of tiles? any ideas.
i am very nervous of timber floors as the dust is terrible on them, and i dont have a dust fairy to clean them for me. my hubby wants high gloss tiles, which i have been told is just as hard to keep clean.
so tempted to do the polish concrete.
Red Roses and Crystal
Well I've experienced different surfaces Katrina and hands down it's polished timber boards for me in a home environment.

Love the cypress pine. It looks so warm and cosy. To me, the polished concrete looks a bit cold and hard. All the best for your new home. We're planning to build in the next year or so ourselves.

definitely timber floors. I once lived with slate floors and they were cold and uncomfortable underfoot. Now we have timbers floors, love love love them. i think they add far more character for a home. It would also depend on the style of house you build. concrete would look pretty daggy in a classic facade home. I know you and Ames love the industrial look, but not on the floor please! Jane x

Polished concrete all the way! I have had both and when presented with the option and no budget limitations, concrete flooring wares sooo well and is awesome to keep clean! There are so many colour choices now and you can add stone and/or glass! Oh, and did I say it is sooo easy to keep clean, even with three monsters running around on it! Mine not yours! lol x Jode

I think it depends on the situation. Holiday homes and tropical climates are fantastic with concrete but in more temperate areas you have to have them with hydronic heating. It is a cheap and beautiful warmth that negates the initial exy initial outlay pretty quickly! On a purely aesthetic front, timber floors are my choice though!

Love timber flooring. We have just had our beautiful Tasmanian Oak floors sanded and polished and I think they look great – http://georgygdesign.blogspot.com/2011/09/blank-canvas.html
I must say that second picture is gorgeous though but I think more for the design and roof then floor. G

My vote is definitely for timber floorboards. I think they add warmth and character to a home.

I'm going to have to side with the floorboards for three reasons:
A) they're a lot more ecologically sustainable than concrete
B) they look better than concrete (IMHO) and
C) they feel better underfoot (again – IMHO).
But then, of the 32 houses I've lived in over my life, 25 have had floorboards, so of course I'm a convert 🙂
Polished concrete gold coast
Its obvious I like the second image, the polished the concrete. It’s beautiful from the eyes.
