What’s been happening on the home front? We’re making a garden.

Hi there! Sorry I’ve been a little sporadic lately. I didn’t feel like blogging last week, and then my blog had a bug (which is still being fixed!), so I have lots to share with you this week!

A couple of weeks ago Ford sent me this Wildtrak Ranger and I have put it to good use. They gave it to me to help with any tasks I had around the home ie. you know, building a new house and stuff. So at the moment we’re trying to build a garden! I’m am not good at gardening, so I left the hard work to my hubby when I was away the other weekend. We bought a pile of escallonia’s to border our driveway and some pines for down the side of the house near the neighbour’s boundary…

I was happy to pick up the plants! I always have that 11 year old kid as my side-kick. I can’t do much without him! We filled the back of the Wildtrak with the plants. Very handy indeed.

escallonia

The escallonia’s make a great hedge. We’ve had them in previous houses. They get a lovely white flower too. The lawn is all down and is knitting well. It’s a buffalo turf, so it gets a little yellow in the beginning, but you just wait until spring time! It will be the greenest lawn in the street 🙂

I have also ordered standard white iceberg roses for across the front of the verandah. But I have to wait until bare-rooted season, so they won’t be ready for another month or so. I am dying to get those in! Then I will also put a little hedge across the front of the roses too.

Like my sheets as curtains?? Good hey?! I am still waiting on the plantation shutters to arrive. They shouldn’t be far away. I am sure the neighbours think I am just leaving those sheets up permanently 🙂

I am still getting questions about the exterior of my home, so I thought I would put some answers here in this post…

Weatherboard product is this.

The colour is Taubman’s Endure Shale Grey.

White Trims.

Gutters, fascia and roof colour is Colorbond Surfmist.

Email me for my BUILDER’S details. I’m happy to recommend him!

home front door mat

Here is my new front door mat! I love it. It’s from Adoremat. You can design your own – such a great idea!

I’ve always wanted an amazing garden, but I am very basic when it comes to the yard.

Do you garden? What’s your favourite hedge as I need something around the back.

This is not a sponsored post, but I have been given the Ford Ranger to try out and Adoremat made the front door mat for me.

My favourite hedge is murraya, you can chop it right back and it keeps on coming back, has that lovely orange blossom scent as well. though it may need a bit of protection from frost, ours gets a bit frosted, but we just cut that bit off in spring and watch it burst again.

I love your comment about the sheets. After living in our brand new house for 12 months I still have sheets hanging up in all the kids windows and I have cheap curtains pinned up at the front of the house. I got a quote earlier this month to get curtains for the kids retreat and our front living room, looks like I might have to sell a kidney if I want to put curtains up throughout the entire house. I love your garden, we had ours done in January and the kids love it. Also means that the dirt doesn’t blow in through the windows any more 🙂

6 months on and we have curtains in two rooms, then there’s a mixture of sheeting material and my winter woollen blankets! And we might just need some of the blankets soon to put on beds – woops!

When we built our home in Melbourne we used James Stirling Pittosporum and they were lovely and thick within 18months. When we planted them they were about 30cms tall and when we moved they were 8ft tall – they were really quick growers and knock off the neighbours from peaking into our yard. They are really hardy and have a lovely green foliage. I would plant them again to use as a hedge. xo

I wanted the Pittosporum down the side of our house, but my husband is reluctant. They drown easy and water will run to them (the slope of our block)… still, I love them and they grow like they are on steroids!!! Plus they are cheap, so I might sneak a few in and see how they go. X

You could get the reluctant husband to run some kind of “garden drain” around them to save their roots!! They are just so cheap and do so much for so little input! Whatever you decide I am sure it will look lovely!

I like pittosporum too…the small silvery foliage makes a good contrast to the usual large glossy leaf screening plants. I have a row of agapanthus alongside it and it's my favourite part of my garden!

Love the facade of your new home and the garden beds you’ve put in. I love repetitive hedges…I’ve had enormous success with Murraya (orange jesamie) and Vibernum too. They are both hardy and create lush hedges with white blooms reasonably quickly.x kl

Fruit trees can make a great hedge – and you get the fruit as a bonus. 🙂 I have a row of fejioas along the back fence, but apples, pears, citrus can all work really well. You just have to shape them as they grow.

Some other decorative options are camellias, Murrayas and various varieties of lilly-pillies. And if you want to attract native birds, grevilleas are the go.

Love the plants you’ve chosen, especially those ones along the driveway. Icebergs will be perfect along your house front! Your place has such a lovely look to it from the front… lovely pitch, gorgeous paint colours and character (and my husband would love that triple garage!) We recently planted a few cottonwood hibiscus bushes around the side of our place… not your typical hibiscus… they have large dark heart shaped leaves and are growing super-fast…

Finally! I have found a home with just what I'm looking for. I am about to do a major renovation on our family home and this week choosing the colours for the exterior. My husband stumbled across your blog and your house is exactly the colours I have chosen. I was a little nervous about making the final decision so its great to see if all together. Your house looks beautiful. I'm planning similar but we live on the beach so it will have a slightly more coastal look to it. Can you tell me the name of the white you used on your trim?
