To tweet or not to tweet?

Ever wondered whether twitter is for you? I am a fan of the twitterverse. That's no secret. I'm an over-sharer. That's no secret. You either are or you aren't and I'm cool with that! Ever wondered whether twitter is for you?

I am a fan of the twitterverse. That’s no secret.

I’m an over-sharer. That’s no secret.

You either are or you aren’t and I’m cool with that!

I can be a real pain in the bum to my in-real-life friends when I start rambling on about twitter. Luckily some of them are already on there.

I joined twitter in 2010. I have recorded 28,000 tweets. This figure comes from my twitter updates, links and replies. This works out to be 38 tweets per day. Wow, I’ve got a lot to say! Who knew? 😉

So what’s it all about?

People can get really freaked out about twitter. They often ask why? Why would you send out a tweet? Who sees it? What would I say?

Is that even something someone wants to hear about? Did I just over-share? Should I say something clever, funny or wise?

And what the heck is a hashtag?

Definition in my words:

Twitter: this is your status updated frequently and quickly. The comments you receive are considered ‘replies’ where you can start a mini conversation about that status you updated. So imagine yourself responding to every comment as soon as you received it on Facebook and on your blog. It’s a combination of Facebook and Blogging but is instant, fast and chatty. You aren’t made to feel silly if you update it saying “I ate a banana” like you would if you did this on Facebook.

Twitter allows you to talk to strangers and jump in on any conversation/status update as you please. You can update your status every 10 minutes if you like. I read once that “Facebook is for the friends you went to school with, but Twitter is for the friends you wish you went to school with.”

I guess before you jump in, you need to decide why you want to tweet.

Is it to meet people?

Is it to promote something?

It is to network?

You don’t need to be on twitter, so don’t freak out if you’re not. It’s not the be all and end all.

However, I will say that a lot of people who visit my blog are from twitter. I use twitter to promote my blog so readers can see when I’ve written a new post. I can tweet out my new blog post and grab people throughout the day to read it.

It’s also a great way to spread news, find out about something and keep up with what’s happening in the world. It’s much faster and efficient than any news source! Plus you can contact companies directly. All big businesses have a social media employee so if you have a drama with a product or service, tweet it out and you’ll be surprised at the response. No company wants nasty tweets sitting out there for all to see.

I also love to stalk celebrities. Shane Warne is soooo bad. It’s painful to read his sucky tweets. But I love it. He ends every tweet with kisses XXX – even if he’s tweeting blokes! Makes me laugh and cringe.

So whether you decide to tweet or not is up to you. What you get out of it also depends on what you put in to it. If you’re prepared to connect and interact, you’ll get it back. It’s hard work to get followers, but it’s all about connecting. If you chat with random people, they will come.

Dip your toe in and test it out. Be real. Have a real photo of yourself.

Do you tweet?

If so, why do you tweet?

Have you had any good/bad experiences?

PS. On the bottom of the comments section make sure you add your twitter handle so I can visit you!

I don’t have a blog but love twitter to get info on when people update their blog or hear about the going-ons in their day. I don’t even have a facebook account anymore as I find twitter much more entertaining.

I love Twitter! I started tweeting because it was a great way to get news feeds from international media, like The Guardian, NZ Stuff, etc. I found Twitter amazing when my hometown suffered terrible earthquakes and I couldn’t reach friends or family, but I could read tweeted updates and news stories.

Then I started getting more frivolous with it, and started following my favourite blogs, celebrities, funny, clever, amusing, weird, etc etc people!

Twitter inspired me to start my own little blog. I tweet and I am proud of it!

I too love Twitter… For every reason you gave above, then some!
On New Years Eve this year I told Piers Morgan that I was sick of his English Football tweets (there may have been some downright dirty trucker-type language involved)…
Well Piers, who clearly cannot defend himself against an Aussie woman, retweeted it, and because he has a few million followers, I got 200,000 mentions in the first hour- this went on for a couple of weeks. Journos contacted me, people abused me, but most agreed with me.
    That’s Twitter I guess!!!!

I considered closing my a/c… But I knew it would die down eventually.
The other reason I love Twitter so much is because this is who I REALLY am. I don’t care whether people like it or hate it! In real life I’m very quiet- but I’m always composing my next tweet!!!

Tara, yes, that’s my thoughts exactly. Twitter is what I’m actually thinking, fb is what I think people want me to be thinking. Fb is dumbed down quite a lot as my dad is on there (big mistake friending parents) and he gets offended at lots of stuff. So twitter is where I express myself as I really am:)

I’m still fumbling around trying to work out twitter and facebook. I’m on there with the attitude…fake it till you make it.
I just started a blog and still haven’t figured out how to send a text yet. Go figure?
I also realised I don’t really have any pics of myself to upload so I will have to sort that out quick smart (I’m pretty shy and don’t usually pose for photos).
When I figure it all out I might be dangerous…it’s the quiet ones you have to look out for!!! ;o)

Scandi Home I hear you. I am faking it ’til I make it on Twitter, too. I’m pretty shy on Twitter but loving Instagram and finding I’m much more likely to engage with people there. Maybe it’s the visual thing… ??

Hi Katrina, I have to admit, I just don’t get twitter. None of it makes any sense to me. We use it for work to announce arts and music events happening, but I just don’t see it for me. I spend Waaayy too much time on blogger so I really do not need another addiction!!

I tweet, I love it. I have a totally different set of friends on there from fb, although some of my twitter friends have come over to fb. I have made some amazing friends all around the world, and actually one girl I “met” from luxembourg is my female soul mate. We just connected straight away. I have even visited her at her home:) I have made friends with an American actor from one of my Fave tv shows and he dms me quite often ,although not as much as he used to.

I see your tweets, that’s how I joined your blog:)

At first I was like “I don’t get it” …”How/Why would I use this?”… Now I check it constantly, tweet less but constantly check! Love that it’s instant. Love seeing the tweets pop up on TV and love watching and seeing what family, friends and people of interest are tweeting about. Keeps me in the loop in so many areas 🙂 Addicted.
