Building a new house means making a lot of decisions—some big, some small, and some that go against the norm! I’ve spent years designing and renovating homes, and this time, I’m making some intentional choices to create a home that’s functional, beautiful, and suits my lifestyle. Here are three things I’m not including in my build and why.
❌ No Overhead Cabinets in the Kitchen
I know, I know—kitchen storage is crucial. But instead of cluttering up the walls with overhead cabinets, I’m opting for a well-planned pantry and lower cabinetry to keep everything organised and accessible. This choice will make the kitchen feel more open, airy, and modern, giving the space a more streamlined look. Plus, fewer cabinets mean less visual bulk and more room for statement features like open shelving or a stunning splashback.
❌ No Downlights Everywhere
A lot of new builds default to downlights everywhere, but I’m choosing a different approach. Instead of flooding every room with overhead lighting, I’m focusing on layered lighting for a warmer, more inviting feel. Think:
- Wall sconces for soft, ambient light
- Track lighting for targeted illumination
- Twinkle lights for a cosy touch
- Pendants and lamps to add personality and warmth
This not only creates a more thoughtful and flexible lighting scheme, but it also helps avoid the harshness of too many bright, overhead lights.
❌ No Gas Appliances
I’m making the switch to a fully electric home, and here’s why:
- Energy efficiency – Modern electric appliances are incredibly efficient, especially induction cooktops, which heat faster and offer better temperature control.
- Future-proofing – As we move towards more sustainable energy solutions, an all-electric home is a step in the right direction.
- Better indoor air quality – Gas appliances can contribute to indoor air pollution, and going electric eliminates that concern.
What Do You Think?
Would you skip any of these in your own build, or do you think I’m making a mistake? I’d love to hear your thoughts—drop a comment below and let’s chat about it! ⬇️
