The front door is always such a big deal!

Yesterday I had to make some decisions about the front door. I'm ridiculously symmetrical and I had to have 2 glass sidelights either side of my door. Yesterday I had to make some decisions about the front door. I’m ridiculously symmetrical and I had to have 2 glass sidelights either side of my door. My poor draftsman had to shuffle everything around to make this happen when I started drawing up my plans. It was a must for me. (As the house builds you’ll see more of my symmetrical tendencies!)

So, I was making some decisions about the casing. I’m having aluminium windows and back doors, but I wanted timber for the front. I thought it would look silly if I had aluminium side lights and a timber front door. Because the house is weatherboard, I want the front door to suit the style. Timber windows and doors for the entire house was just not an option for me in Wagga in case you’re wondering.

So now, I’m deciding on the front door and those sidelights. I’m pretty sure they will be just solid plain glass but the door??? Glass in the top??

Ok, so then I will have to decide on a handle?? The decision-making is happening. I need to make a list and start ticking it all off!

What do you think about the front door?

It will be all white, so don’t worry about the colour.

Today they are pouring the SLAB! I’m so excited. A-M (she got a new blog design too if you’ve haven’t seen it) has been calling it #slabpride on twitter. I’m off for a walk, but I’ll be stalking my block later on.

Oh, and I have some cool news to share with you soon that has to do with my blog. 🙂

Have a great day! X

I like timber too and think we will have same as last house with sidelights and glass overhead. We had specially selected glass put in last time and then we had a matching glass piece in entrance that was hand painted. We also had a wider than normal door (1220mm) and am definitely going for that again! Good luck with your decision! xx

Love a solid looking timber door.. I think glass in the top could depend on how high your ceilings are going to be. We have high ceilings with glass above the door, this works – even if it is the old stained glass at the moment..one day we will replace it!
    Pictures 4 & 5 are lovely!
    Have a great day!

It looks gorgeous, if I was building a house I would be going for the same style!

I love the third last picture, with the chairs and the deck and the potted plants either side of the door!

There’s a glass panel above our front doors (we have double front doors) and the doors themselves have a glass panel in the top, with lead lighting. I’m a big fan of the glass panels as they let in light, as well as being very aesthetically pleasing. Good luck with choosing yours.

Great news re the slab pour too! Building seems to be moving along nicely. 🙂

Definitely a glass panel above the door if your ceilings are high enough!

Love the doors with sidelights and above the door, as it’s true to the era (and lets in loads of light!) I know what you mean about not doing ALL timber hence aluminium windows! Timber is lovely but the price! OWWW! I went with slightly frosted sidelights as mine have a picture on them too! 🙂 And what’s really weird is ‘after’ I chose the door I discovered the house I grew up had been renovated and they chose the same front door!

Thought I would add my 2 cents worth – I know you have active boys, as do I. I have the solid timber door/glass sidelight arrangement – second from bottom and am so glad I didn’t put glass in the door. My kids CANNOT close or use the doorstop to keep the door open so if your house is anything like mine you will be hearing that door BANG shut more often than not – glass sidelights seem to hold up but I am not sure that glass in the door would’ve!!

Personally I love the look of an all solid door. Love the house in the 4th pic down. Colours are gorgeous!

I agree about it depending on the height of the rooms etc.. but all things perfect, i’d definitely surround my front door in glass!

Makes me feel a bit sad actually, as my door is a bit bleah and probably always will be 🙂

Oh I love the one you have pictured above mine, with the lights in the door. I am a sucker for window lights and transoms…. but had never considered them in a door. Now you have ME thinking. Beyond exciting about the slab! A-M xx

    Hi Katrina
I’ve seen an ad in a mag – prob home beautiful? for windows that are aluminium outside but timber finish inside – think you can actually paint the inside so maybe it is actually timber. They looked great ! Will try to find the ad for you . Also we had our builder install our double doors and build in a transom space above them.
Slotted a sheet of glass in, trimmed it up with wood and we were done – transom complete for way WAY cheaper than actually buying one. Good luck !

Please please go with the glass above as well as the glass side panels, much classier. We recently built and I wished I had put in the keyless door handle. Good luck, Rae x

The picture there with the table and chairs on the verandah, those doors are my dream doors. That is my dream porch with my dream french windows.

I would go with the window above the door but no window in the door. But you will go with what you like the best!

If you’ve got enough height for a transom, I’d do that with the glass sidelights and a solid front door but if you don’t then the glass up on top looks good; lighter and something a bit more unique. Love the examples you’ve shown! x KL

Oh how exciting. I love the thoughts and planning that goes into the details. Personally, I’m a glass around the front door and window above. I also love a royal blue, black or red front door. And don’t forget you can put a Frosted house number in the transom, or house name near the door. I can’t wait to see the final product.
