The day I met Rick Astley

Last week I met the one, the only, BIGGEST pop-star of the 80's with his song "Never gonna give you up" being NUMBER 1 in 25 countries... RICK ASTLEY. OMG! For me, this was hilarious and I was rolling-on-the-floor-laughing... Do you remember him? He was massive, huge and one of the biggest artists back in the 80s! Click below …

OMG! For me, this was hilarious and I was rolling-on-the-floor-laughing…

Do you remember him? He was massive, huge and one of the biggest artists back in the 80s! Click below to listen… (it’ll be stuck in your head now!)

Can you believe this song was number 1 in 25 countries?? Yes, I know I already said that, but I didn’t know THAT! So now, you’ll need to YouTube his others songs and all the memories will come flooding back.

Anyway, I got to hang out with him backstage before one of his shows last week. As a part of this crazy radio challenge I am doing we needed to find a famous person. Ok, so I had to make it fair. I could have gone to Sydney and got Scott Cam or whatever, but that would have made people roll their eyes… Anyway, I found Rick’s manager and BOOM! Here I am…

This man can sing. I watched his concert and he was good. He sang all his oldies and had fun doing them. He chatted to the crowd all the way through it, making people laugh, telling stories and basically laughing at himself. I loved every bit of it. He was cringing at himself and some of the 80s things he did, but it was all light-hearted and fun.

So, TICK, that’s off my bucket list. 🙂

Rick has a new song out too, which he sang and I really liked it. My husband and I have been pumping it in the car. It’s called Superman and you can hear it here.

Have you met anyone famous you never thought you’d ever meet?

I met Geri Halliwell in a gym in London, she was in the cafe and my oldest daughter who was a baby at the time played with her dog…I also witnessed her walk NAKED through the gym change rooms!!! It was 2002 pre twitter, YouTube etc so she didn’t even worry:)
Same gym was also where I worked out on a treadmill behind Elle!!!! Ah those were the days!!!

How awesome! Lucky you. He seems like a nice bloke too. Looks like you had loads of fun! I’ve met Barnesy three times but I’m close friends with his daughter through singing so we have crossed paths. Met Shannon Noll, Mahalia, Darren Percival and Adam Brand through him too. But I’d LOVE to meet Rick Astley! x

Oh my God, I had such a crush on him when I was a schoolgirl! Please let him know I’m now old enough to marry him. 🙂 I met all the members of the 80’s version of Crowded House – Neil & Tim Finn, Paul Hester, and Nick Seymour back in high school. I can tell you I didn’t come off cloud nine for weeeeeeeks. In fact, Neil Finn is still someone I would leave my husband for. And my husband knows that. 😉

I LOVE this song!!! Reading this made me think of that Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore movie “Music and Lyrics” where he was an 80s pop star. Made me smile to see it’s true!!!

Awesome! I met Olivia Newton John in The Rocks, Sydney, when I was a teenager. A group of girlfriends and I spotted her and ran towards her as she was getting into a waiting car, hoping for an autograph. She looked terrified and we appologised…she said we weren’t the ‘usual’ mob fans and talked to us for about 20 minutes. WE didn’t get an autograph but she was so sweet, it’s a lasting memory.

I have always been a Doctor Who fan and as a child I was lucky enough to meet Tom Baker (Doctor Who no 4, big multi coloured scarf). We had just moved to Scotland from England and my Dad was the manager of the largest supermarket (at the time) to open in Europe and Tom was the special guest at the opening. I was only 6 and I clearly remember the meeting I got a copy of a Doctor Who book which he signed “to Julie love to you Doctor Who”. I turned to him as proud as punch and said “my Daddy is the manager of this store” in such a way that made it sound like my Dad was soooo much better than him lol. I always think of that now when I look at my children and realise how we are the centre of their world. I have thoroughly been enjoying the newest series of Doctor Who and hope that one day I can meet David Tennant but for now I have a beautiful childhood memory of meeting my hero and I will never forget it

Wow he is wayyyyyy cool! I love his music! Haven’t listened to the new one yet, but I will! I have met JPY (aka John Paul Young) remember him!? And Simone Buchanan from Hey Dad fame, as well as Darren Lockyer (footballer) who is really lovely to talk to and thanked me for waiting in the hot sun to have him sign my book! I’ve also met the Medium and 2008 Winner of ‘THE ONE’ – Charmaine Wilson and Chris Cranswick-Smith from Ready Steady Cook and Owner of Emmilou’s in Surry Hills. I don’t really let the fame thing get in the way. I’m not really in awe of celebs. I just take them as they come, as real people! (I’ve spoken to Guy Sebastian on Twitter, does that count?)

I love Rick Astley! Yes, I’m singing it in my head. He looks great, good work Katrina! I used to work on the Front Desk at the Sebel Townhouse in Sydney back in the day and met many celebrities. The most memorable was Dawn Wells who was Maryanne from Gilligans Island – lovely, lovely person and alot of fun 🙂

Hi katrina, Rick’s manager Tops is lovely. I was lucky enough to meet Rick 2 yrs ago in Singapore. After his show I was asked to go for a drink with him, Debbie Gibson and their bands, all organised by Tops. Made all my dreams come true drinking with Rick Astley until 3am 🙂 Tops and I have stayed in touch and the melbourne show was on my birthday so my husband and I flew from Sydney for a weekend away to see Ricks show. I never thought anything could beat my Singapore trip, but Tops and my husband organised for Rick to bring me on stage, sing happy birthday to me and then got me to sing a song with him. At one point Rick got down on his knees and sang to me, then put his microphone down and slow danced with me. That was a dream come true that I never even knew I had. Rick and tops are such lovely gentleman and considering the length of time they have been in show business it’s quite refreshing to see someone so humble 🙂 what show were you back stage at? we were at 2 of the sydney shows after the show as well 🙂 ps we love Rick’s new song too, my 4 yr old son knows all the words lol.
