Building a new home is exciting, but it’s also full of decisions that can make or break your space. With years of experience in interior design and renovations, I’ve learned a thing or two about what not to do when selecting finishes and fixtures. Here are the top mistakes I’d avoid at all costs!
1. Choosing Flooring Without Considering Practicality
That gorgeous light timber flooring? Absolutely stunning—but if you have pets or kids, it can be a nightmare to maintain. Scratches, dirt, and spills will show up much more easily, leading to constant upkeep. Instead, consider durable and low-maintenance options that still achieve the aesthetic you love, like engineered timber or hybrid flooring.
2. Forgetting About Future-Proofing
Your needs will change over time, so your home should be ready to adapt. Built-in storage, extra power points, and flexible spaces can make a huge difference down the track. Think about where you might need charging stations, extra cabinetry, or multi-purpose areas that can evolve with your lifestyle.
3. Skimping on Hardware & Tapware
It’s tempting to go for budget-friendly options when it comes to handles, taps, and fittings—but trust me, cheap hardware can peel, rust, and break far too quickly. Mid-range, high-quality picks will last longer and save you money in the long run. Bonus tip: matte and brushed finishes hide fingerprints and watermarks better than polished ones!
4. Picking the Wrong White Paint
Not all whites are created equal! The wrong undertone can make your walls look yellow, too cold, or completely mismatched with your other finishes. Always test multiple samples in both natural and artificial light before making a decision. A warm white works well in cosy spaces, while a cool white suits modern, minimal designs.
5. Forgetting to Check Tile Batch Numbers
Here’s a little-known but very important tip: always check the batch numbers of your tiles before installation. Tiles can vary slightly between batches, and if they don’t match, you might end up with an uneven, patchy look. Save yourself the headache and ensure your entire order is from the same batch.
Final Thoughts
Interior selections can feel overwhelming, but avoiding these common mistakes will set you up for a home that’s both beautiful and functional. If you’re unsure about your choices, getting expert guidance can make all the difference. Happy building!
