I don’t have time to cook so I don’t… (plus, I will give you a $250 Coles voucher & a $100 Kikki K voucher!)

If you’ve been hanging around this blog long enough, you’ll know I am not a fan of cooking. It’s not my strong point. It’s not that I can’t cook (I can!), it’s just that I do not enjoy it. I’d rather stick a fork in my eyes than cook anything fancy.

But… I have 3 boys and I NEED to cook. So my motto is: cook for survival, not pleasure.

Of course, there are times where I long for a delicious baked meal or stir-fry. That’s when my husband steps up to the plate. He is a gem and likes to whip up tasty meals. He uses recipe books and stuff…

I don’t bake – there are proper bakeries for such treats! My sister was making a cake once and was using flour… one of my children asked her “why are you cooking with powder?“. My poor boys get cooking/barbecuing lessons from their Dad and their Aunty, not me!

I just don’t have the time or the inclination.

In this house don’t ask “what are we having for dinner” until about 30 minutes before we are actually going to eat. I have no idea until the last minute.

My days are usually crazy and are filled with appointments, kids activities and normal household duties. I’m just like you – busy and time poor.

I am a fan of buying lots of food in one go so I always know there is something I can whip out of the fridge or freezer at the last minute. I’m not much of a food planner! My girlfriend once tried to get me to make a meal plan. I did it for 2 weeks and it worked, but I couldn’t keep up with it! Ha! I’m just not that organised when it comes to food and meal planning. I wing everything.

Recently I was asked if I would like to try the Birds Eye SteamFresh Vegetables and SteamFresh Fish. As if I was going to say no! This was an easy dinner for me and I knew the boys would love it.

The whole meal was done and ready to eat in a matter of minutes. My husband did not believe me when I said the entire meal was microwaved.

So here is what I bought, and what I did…

♥ Packet of Birds Eye SteamFresh Carrot, Cauliflower and Broccoli
♥ Packet of Birds Eye SteamFresh Carrots, Peas and Corn

For my whole family I only used half of the vegetables (so there is another meal waiting there for me!)

  • Each pouch is cooked in the microwave for 2.5 minutes to deliver perfectly cooked vegetables quickly without the fuss
  • One pack contains 4 steam pouches of vegetables

♥ 2 boxes of Birds Eye SteamFresh Fish – Garlic & Spring Onion and Thai Coconut Curry (this gave us 4 pieces of fish – my baby doesn’t like fish, so he had veggies)

  • Simply cook in under 5 minutes in the microwave
  • Steam cooking locks in flavour and freshness for perfect fish every time
  • 97% fat free,

I LOVED the Garlic flavour and my husband loved the Thai curry.

I’m not joking you when I say this meal was delicious. It was the easiest thing I have ever cooked and I will be adding Birds Eye SteamFresh items to my shopping basket every single week.

Now here comes the good part – I have the best giveaway for you!

I am going to give ONE winner a $250 Coles voucher & a $100 Kikki K voucher!

Yes, I’m serious! That’s $350 worth.

As usual, this competition needs to be a game of skill. I want to hear about your lazy cooking because you don’t have time…

I made sure I married a man who cooked for a living. Then when I’m feeling lazy, I’m extra sweet to him when he comes home! And if that all fails, it’s a phone call to mum for an invite to tea.

With a new baby in the house the 2 big ones have had a few lazy meals lately, the laziest being beans on toast. Minus the beans cos I dropped them in my sleep deprived state. To make up for it I gave them yoghurt and fruit after the toast. My 6 year old informed me she wanted a real dinner the next night.

My lazy cooking…..in a massive household of 8 boys and 2 girls who eat me out of house and home is…….(drum roll please)….deferring to my husband…or a pasta meal that cooks in 20, or a slow cooker dinner…but I love the nights when the kids make their own Mac & Cheese or 2 min noodles, but this is so rare because they need real food, so easy it is never THAT easy for us (or rarely) as I feel too guilty! They cost a fortune, and I am like you Katrina, I despise cooking. I loathe it because they are all so fussy and with so many different personalities and temperaments I need a freezer FULL of food to accommodate everything, including the Gluten Free kids I have! JOYOUS! How many more years of this do I have….

I must have my kids trained well: when I ask them what they’d like for tea that is quick, the 7yo usually chooses 2 min noodles, the 9yo opts for a toasted sandwich.

Our easy meal is quite the laugh for our family and friends… we call it “prison food”. It’s simple- lean mince cooked in Gravox, served with rice (cooked in the rice cooker). It looks pretty ordinary, but it’s quick to prepare and always wolfed down eagerly!

When I wake up in the morning on a weekend, I’m often too lazy to have a piece of breakfast. Sometimes I just toast bread and eat it plain because I’m too lazy to open a jar of spread (even though I have Nutella, Vegemite, jams and peanut butter available). Sometimes I’m too lazy to open a packet of bread and toast it. In those times, I just eat a banana.

    Man, I’m really lazy…

My lazy meal is hotdogs :S Just boil or cook in the frypan and voila! The best bit is everyone else has to sort out their own toppings 🙂

Mine is “Easy peanut chicken & Vegetable Satay”This is so quick and easy and i don’t have to think as i always have the ingredients on hand.Combine a small amt of Light peanut butter, sweet chilli sauce and Soy sauce. Stir a bit through sliced Chicken fillets. Stir fry with some frozen mixed vegies and rest of the sauce with a bit of water and serve over soaked and drained Hokkien Noodles. It takes me 15 mins at the most. Unless i have to thaw the chicken out.

I have 26 cans of SPC spaghetti in my cupboard so when the kids are hungry or myself we just open a can and eat YUM. Its nutritional and tastes great. I get to have more time with my kids instead of a kitchen.

Popping around to the mother in laws with the kids always works for us when we can’t be bothered to cook. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to work when we don’t have the kids.

Widowed and left with 2 children and a 7 day a week business, cooking became one chore too many. These days I am heavily reliant on supermarket frozen meals. Love the range – lots of Asian, vegetarian, pizza (which we supplement with a few fresh veges). On days with a tiny bit of time we have toasted sandwiches with anything from cheese to the more unusual (artichoke, sundried tomatoes etc) or omelettes with the same. Wraps – meat of any kind, shredded cheese, salad veges and any sauce in the cupboard – are the top of my culinary offerings nowadays.
