“Katrina and I decided early on that being on The Block was a once in a lifetime opportunity for us, that we were never going to be safe in our designs and that we really wanted to show the public that we could be daring, push the limits and show that we have creative flare.
On the very first day that we entered The Block we chose our target market…the DINKS (aka Double Incomers No Kids). Our reasons were simple -the living area is relatively small, there is no parking, the outdoor areas don’t allow for trampolines, swings, bikes, and there is limited storage space to house everything that a child accumulates. Our decision here is what ultimately influenced our design choices for there on in.
In the first week we created an absolutely smashing Guest Bedroom…the Judges loved it. So in week two we wanted to show everybody that we could do something other than a bedroom, hence we threw ourselves into designing a very functional and spacious Home Office. We never second guessed this and still stand by it today.
In real estate today it is almost essential that properties have a home office. More and more people are working from home or bringing elements of their workplace home as they continue to work longer and longer hours. Gone are the days of having a desk stuck in the corner of a bedroom, as they are impractical and often unused. Having a functionally and aesthetically pleasing home office in a property is undoubtedly a huge selling point…I know it is for me!
Obviously we found it really hard to incorporate all elements of 2nd hand! Whilst we love ‘some’ 2nd goods, we struggled to fit this in to the design and overall look of our home. After all, we were aiming our house at professional people who liked classy, sleek, fresh and pizzazz.
We hope you like our room as much as we do! It really is a dream office and we can’t wait for you to see how the office fits into the rest of our house.“
Amie.

Well i LOVED it. My hubby and i both have an office each in our home so i love the idea of one room for 2 people to work in. Hmmmm wanna come and renovate our offices…??? LOL.
Keep up the great work gals 🙂

Your instincts were spot on in my book.
Like Shannon we have two dedicated office spaces in our home and it will be a major selling point for me when I go shopping for a new home later on in the year.
As we will be down-sizing I imagine we'll be consolidating our two spaces into one and your alternative of providing separate work areas with stacks of storage looks like pure heaven to me {I'm a neat freak, my partner…..not so much!}.
In addition to your design concept I would like to applaud you for your styling of the room.
This is where I believe you came out head and shoulders above the other couples in the competition – you really listened to the brief [just like you did in the vintage drawer challenge] and nailed it with great pinache!
Thank you for sharing your insights Amie – you two are the stellar standouts for me and I'm itching to see how the whole house unfolds.

Hi Amie 🙂 I think the vision that you and Katrina have for the house is exciting, and both the rooms we have seen so far are just amazing! Although I no longer fall into the DINK category, I would love to have a home office (my office is the on the sofa) and it is something we will be adding to our home when we extend in the future! I loved the chalkboard walls and metallic painted doors on the fabulous storage cupboards. Our family have loved both your rooms so far and can't wait to see what is next! You are going to do so brilliantly at auction…well done to you both for sticking to 'your guns', so to speak! Go girls ~ xx

I loved your room last night. I agree studies that double as spare bed rooms just end up as junk rooms (well in my experience anyway!) I really think the judges marked you way to harshly last night.

Whilst watching the reveal of this room on the block I was actually a bit frustrated that the judges missed the whole point of the "DINKS" focus. Probably yelling at the TV screen in hindsight did not help them understand any better ;0) In any case with that original focus in mind I think it fitted the bill perfectly. The second hand elements where factored in smoothly (and this is an opinion from a second hand dealer) so that there was the best of both worlds. Looking forward to seeing the next room and will try to not yell at the TV screen any more (well perhaps a little)

I definitely agree that you shouldn't have been judged so harshly and think a home office is perfect!
I LOVE that green chair!

LOVE this room, and found myself frustrated with the judging last night. This is THE perfect DINK study. Love your vision ladies.

It couldn't have been said any better.
Concise, no waffling and to all the knockers – stick that in your pipe and smoke it!
well done girls again

I really loved the chairs you used, as well as the exit sign. Your rationale make complete sense, pity the judges didn't see it. Oh well, onward and upward!

Hear, hear Aimie, well said!
I adored your study/office space and thought that you two did a great job just like last week. I think there were a lot of us tutting, huffing and puffing listening to last nights judging. Don't get me wrong I liked what the other couples did, but I just thought that those judges were a bit off the mark with your place.
Well done girls.

Seems like a really smart way of thinking!
I loved your dedicated office space. It's a bit 'same old same old' seeing the same half office/half guestroom and I thought you would have been given a bit more credit for thinking differently (still loved all the rooms though!)
The Moerks
Nice work Amie and Katrina, the home office looks great and I would love it. One desk for blogging and the other for the rest of the family!
I thought the real estate guy was a little out of touch re the books. Doesn't he follow blogland? Back to front books is the go. Either that or rip off the cover.
I am glad to hear that you painted the doors white. The idea of the silver was great but perhaps a little tricky to apply.
Bad luck on the plumbing, I thought you were going to make it.

Katrina and Amie, I love you guys! I've been following the block religiously this season and you are my favourite 'couple' hands down! I love your design style and you guys just do not fail to crack me up each night. I can't wait to see what else you both have in store for us on the Block… and whatever you're doing now, keep up the fab work!

The judges totally missed the point. I think a study is a MAJOR selling point for the demographic you are aiming the property at. I loved it. You are focussed and driven and so look like you both know what you are doing. Go lovelies. We cheer like we are at a soccer match when we watch you two. Oh we laughed last night when you said you would prefer to just sit in the car and not do the stupid challenge. I hear you girl. I would have been exactly the same. I love your open honesty Amie. I can really relate. The most entertaining moments in the show are from you two girls. A-M xx
PS Oh and the comment about the books turned the wrong way. What rock does he live under?!!!!
Michelle
I think you are both doing an awesome job.I have loved both your rooms and look forward to seeing the rest.I really feel out of all the teams I can relate most to you and your sister …being a mum and all and a love of interiors ofcourse.

As you know, we renovated something very similar in the same area WHEN WE WERE DINKS! And when I had a baby, we sold it to a very successful gay guy who owned a top modelling agency.
We didn't have two stories so it was very small, and it only had ONE bedroom, and an OFFICE ! The office was too tiny to even be a nursery – hee hee ..
You got your target market right on.
Oh, and we sold for a bomb of money, so I guess we got it right too 🙂
