On the weekend I decided to smash out a mini DIY project – a chalkboard wall! Ummmm yes, I am sure some interior designers will be saying “please no more chalkboard” but I love it so here’s a huge wall I painted!

This wall is in my laundry. It’s a HIGH TRAFFIC area and the door on the left is the garage and the door on the right walks straight in to my kitchen. We walk through this little area 100 times a day.

I had mentioned to my husband a few weeks ago that the wall was getting marked with hands and bags and I said I’d have to paint it again. Instead of repainting it white (only to have it marked again in a few months!) I thought why not paint it black – and chalkboard! This would be a fun spot in my home. My laundry is large with a storage room, so I guess it could be like a mud-room… Plus it’s a very bright room with lots of natural light so it could handle a black wall (don’t paint black if you don’t have enough light there to start with as it throws it’s own dark shadows).

Anyhoo, my husband offered to help and we both took turns painting…

I used the Dulux brand above. Now the can said this 500ml would do 4m2 with 2 coats, but NO that wasn’t enough and I had to go back and buy more! So I would recommend that if you have a wall of my size you will need a 1L tin.

Two coats later and then I let it dry overnight…

There we go! A quick little transformation in a high traffic area, plus it’s practical and fun!

Do you have a chalkboard wall? Or do you plan on doing one?

It looks fantastic. I also love the layout with garage and kitchen coming through the laundry.

I still love the chalkboard walls. Such a great spot being such a high traffic area. I would love one in my house. So handy and great when you feel like making a bit of creative art with it! 🙂

I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of a chalkboard wall! Yours looks awesome in that spot. I did our laundry door which is also a high traffic area (outside). We often write bday messages on it.

Looks fantastic. Is it messy when you run it off? Or do you use chalk pens? I love the look but dislike how chalkboards can end up looking dusty & tired. I’m keen to hear how it wears?

Perfect location. I love it… I find it funny when the kids leave me notes of what they want in groceries …..

Is the chalk rubbing off cleanly? At school, we needed to ‘cure’ a blackboard first so that the chalk didn’t sort of ‘stain’ the new board. Let me know if you’re having a problem keeping it ‘clean’.

Hi Katrina! The wall look amazing. Can you let us know about the dust? As an ex teacher I know how much is created…. Can’t imagine it being easy in a thorofare and then tracked throughout the house!?

I’m going to buy chalk pens and see if that minimizes the dust – otherwise I guess I’ll be cleaning it now and then. X

You can buy dustless chalk. I get it for my kids chalk wall and there’s hardly any dust to clean up 🙂

I have a chalkboard wall (4300×2800) runs from the kitchen through to butlers pantry/laundry, hours of fun. Word of caution the chalkboard pens are hard to remove completely, don’t know if it helps to season the wall before use. Yours looks great 🙂
