Choosing carpet was one of those decisions that felt simple at first, until I started looking at it through the lens of an 8 star energy efficient home.
When you are building or renovating with performance in mind, the little things stop being little. Every material choice matters, not just for how it looks, but for how the home feels to live in day after day. Carpet ended up playing a much bigger role in comfort, warmth, and overall performance than I initially expected.
I remember standing in store at Andersens, surrounded by samples, completely stuck. Too warm, too cool, too flat, too textured. At the time it felt overwhelming, but now that the carpet is installed, I am so glad we slowed down and made a considered choice.

Carpet is not just about looks
Carpet often gets treated as a purely aesthetic decision. Colour, texture, pile height, and whether it suits the style of the house. While all of that absolutely matters, carpet also plays a real role in how a home performs.
Carpet adds insulation, helps regulate temperature, and makes a home feel warm and cosy without overworking the heating and cooling. In an energy efficient house, this kind of passive comfort is exactly what you want. Anything that helps hold warmth in winter and reduces heat loss through the floor is supporting the bigger picture.

How carpet fits into an 8 star energy efficient home
An 8 star home is designed to reduce energy demand from the outset. Orientation, insulation, glazing, airtightness, and smart material choices all work together so the house stays comfortable naturally.
Interior finishes then support those principles. Carpet, particularly in bedrooms, helps create a thermal buffer between your feet and the floor structure. The result is rooms that feel warmer, softer, and more comfortable, especially in the colder months, without constantly reaching for the heater.

Choosing the right fibre
One of the biggest considerations for us was fibre type. Not all carpet performs the same way, especially in a high performance home.
We chose wool because it offers natural insulation, helps regulate temperature, and is breathable. Those qualities work beautifully in an energy efficient home where balance and comfort matter just as much as efficiency. Wool also has a softness underfoot that instantly makes a space feel more inviting.
From a design perspective, wool brings depth and warmth that synthetic fibres often struggle to replicate. The colour we selected sits comfortably with the warmer tones layered throughout the house and helps the bedrooms feel calm, grounded, and complete.

Do not overlook the underlay
Underlay is one of those hidden elements that makes a huge difference. The right underlay improves insulation, increases comfort, and helps the carpet perform better over time.
We looked closely at underlay options to make sure they supported our energy goals while still delivering that soft, cushioned feel underfoot. It is not something you see once the carpet is down, but it is something you feel every single day.
Comfort without cranking the heating or cooling
One of the biggest benefits we have noticed since installation is how cosy the bedrooms feel. The carpet contributes to the overall warmth of the house, meaning we are not relying as heavily on heating to feel comfortable.
This is where thoughtful material choices really shine. When finishes work with the design of the home rather than against it, comfort feels effortless and natural.

A decision worth taking your time on
Choosing carpet is not a decision to rush, especially in an energy efficient home. Taking the time to consider fibre, underlay, colour, and performance makes a noticeable difference long term.
Now that the wool carpet is installed, the bedrooms feel soft, warm, and settled! It supports the performance of the house, aligns with our 8 star energy efficiency goals, and still looks beautiful, which is always the sweet spot.
If you are building or renovating and want a home that feels comfortable without overworking heating and cooling systems, do not underestimate the role carpet can play. When chosen thoughtfully, it is not just a finishing touch, it becomes part of how the home works.
I chose wool carpet – Cliftonville in colour Hatton.
