Living and entertaining outdoors is part of life in Australia. The connection between indoors and outdoors is highly valued and should not be overlooked when building or renovating a home. A seamless flow between the two is what homebuyers are looking for, so getting it right could put your home at the top of the list.

Build a deck

A deck will add instant appeal to any outdoor space. Even if you already have an alfresco or pergola, adding a deck off the end will provide another designated space for relaxing and entertaining. A deck also offers the perfect spot overlooking your pool. Add some large plants in pots and comfortable chairs to define the space.

Outdoor kitchen

It doesn’t have to be complicated, keep it simple with space for food prep, a built in BBQ, a fridge and a sink. Practicality wins over design!

Fire pit

If you’re lucky enough to live up north, then you can skip over this point. But for the rest of us who experience winter and freezing conditions, fire pits are becoming more and more popular. A few drinks while the kids roast marshmallows with friends will soon become the favourite way to spend a weekend at home.

Lighting

Make your outdoor space magical with lighting. Summer nights call for string lights, spotlights on your backyard features and set the mood with dimmer lights under the alfresco.

Landscaping

Perfecting your landscaping will pull everything else together, the finishing touch. Think about maintenance and whether you want flowers or evergreen shrubs. If you’re unsure, your local nursery will be able to help!

How have you created the perfect outdoor space?

    Hi Katrina,
Thanks for this post! Any ideas where to get those string/bulb lights from? I got my last set from Ebay a few years ago when they weren’t that available in Australia, but I’m thinking there should be somewhere else to get them now?

    Thanks so much x

Love the herringbone pattern on cabinets in the outdoor kitchen! Were they custom?
