The Winter months provide the perfect time to start improving your home, especially if you’re planning on listing your home for sale during the busy Spring season. The combination of harsh winds, cold nights and rain can damage both your garden and the exterior of your home without some maintenance. Keep your home in good condition with these five home maintenance jobs.
Protect your garden
The Winter weather can do a lot of damage to your garden but there are a couple of simple steps you can take to keep it healthy. Protect your lawn from the Winter chill with fertiliser that will keep your lawn alive and green, cover your pool and keep it clean from debris and algae and keep up with your weeding so they don’t, take over the entire garden. While the lack of sunshine and cooler weather may prevent your garden from growing, you can prevent it from killing it completely.
Improve your home’s heat performance
You don’t have to freeze inside your home to save money on your power bills. Use the Winter months to review the performance of your home. Check that your windows and doors are sealed properly to eliminate drafts or heat loss and seal those gaps. By fixing these issues now, you’ll also improve the performance of your home in the Summer when we switch to using the air-conditioner. Make sure you’re also checking the dampness of your home during Winter as this can flag potential moisture issues that are likely to arise or worsen down the track.
Check your paintwork
The integrity of the outside paintwork on your home can be put to the test during Winter thanks to the harsh wind, rain and cooler temperatures your home is exposed to. Any surfaces that are already beginning to crack or peel could get worse in the cooler months. Repainting these surfaces will prevent any of these issues getting worse and more expensive later in the year.
Clean your gutters
By now your gutters are likely to be filled with the debris of Autumn. When your gutters are clogged, it can cause damage to your home by not allowing the water to flow properly. Clearing out your gutters will ensure they’re draining correctly and preventing any leaks to form in your home.
While the Winter months bring harsher weather, they provide the time to complete maintenance jobs around the home to improve the look and functionality of your property, preparing it for sale.
