Thinking of building an energy-efficient home in Australia?
We’re in the process of building our 8-star energy-rated home and have already made some important choices that will help with comfort, sustainability, and lower energy bills. These steps focus on how the home performs year-round, not just quick fixes.

Here are 3 energy-efficient building strategies we’ve implemented so far.

1. Under Slab Insulation for Thermal Efficiency

Why it matters:
Insulating under the concrete slab helps regulate internal temperatures by reducing heat loss in winter and keeping the slab from absorbing cold in cooler months. This step strengthens the home’s thermal envelope.

What we used:
High-performance rigid foam insulation board designed for Australian conditions. This layer prevents unwanted heat transfer from the ground into the home.

2. Double-Glazed Windows Positioned for Optimal Performance

Why it matters:
Windows can be a major source of heat gain and loss. Our double-glazed windows are carefully positioned to maximise natural light and ventilation while reducing unwanted heat transfer.

Our choice:
We’ve installed standard double-glazed windows and positioned them strategically to take advantage of sun angles and shading. This helps improve energy efficiency and keeps the internal temperature stable.

3. Pro Clima Wrap for Airtightness and Moisture Control

Why it matters:
A well-sealed home is more energy efficient. The Pro Clima membrane we’ve used acts as a weather barrier and airtight wrap, helping to prevent drafts and moisture ingress.

How it helps:
This continuous airtight layer reduces thermal bridging and supports insulation performance, resulting in a more comfortable indoor environment and improved heating and cooling efficiency.

Why We’re Sharing This

Building an 8-star energy-efficient home in Australia means making smart choices early on. So far, under slab insulation, double-glazed windows positioned correctly, and a high-quality Pro Clima wrap are already making a difference.

If you’re planning a sustainable build or renovation, these elements are definitely worth considering from the start.
